Guest Andrea
Well, this weekend was warm and the suckers were running so we decided to wade up the creek Sat. night and last night. Those fish were EVERYWHERE!!! They were even running up on to the sand bars. We wound up gigging 15 Saturday night and 16 last night. The water was quite cold but I was having so much fun gettin these big ol' fish...that I didn't mind. Gotta take some pics this afternoon and I will post them in the morning. Not sure if these fish are called something else up north but down here they are called redhorse suckers. And they are absolutely DEE-LISH-OUS!!!! Here's what they look like: suckers

Guest Andrea
Re: Sucker gigging We have carp here too. These fish are somewhat different than the common carp. They are long and don't get as monsterous as the carp can. They are prepared the same and taste the same as jackfish ( pike). Wish I had the pictures to show ya'll today so you could see what I mean. Missed160
Re: Sucker gigging We've got carp and suckers in Minnesota. The suckers live more in clean flowing water. Very few people would think about eating them though, they are listed as a "Rough Fish". I know some people smoke em.. But eating them, I gotta agree with Gator.. [/ QUOTE ] Well, you gotta look at it this way. If you eat catfish.....another so called "trash" fish...then you would like suckers. They feed on the same things. The name is not one that would invoke hunger pains, but then again neither is CAT-fish.

Tominator
Re: Sucker gigging I can't even stand to catch those smelly things, let alone eat them. Must be (hopefully) a different species.
SuperMn106
Re: Sucker gigging We were in a river right where a creek runs into it. There was a metal boom about 10-12 ft long, about 15-17 inches around. On one end it was like a fishing reel except really big lol. The "line" we used was Thick rope about 8 inches around. We had stakes and everything that kept it in the ground. We made a square out of metal tubing that was 9ft X 9 ft. The net used to be off the bank about 5-6 ft. It was nothing to get 40 per night. I remember one time my dad "cranked" the net up and we ended up having 28 suckers, 2 sheepshead, 2 carp and 5 walleye in one thing. But you couldnt keep the walleye. it sure was fun. i wish i had some pictures cuz its kinda hard to explain. hope that kinda helped
Shaun_300
Re: Sucker gigging They look similar to the Whitefish that we have up here. They are GREAT eating... They also look a bit like what we call suckers up here. They look similar to the whitefish bit their mouths are a bit bigger and are pointed downwards more than the whitefish. I have never eaten a sucker before. We actually use 8-10" sucker minnows for bait for muskies and northern pike up here... Sucker Ugly lookin' thing eh?
