10 gauges? Overrated!!!

Went out yesterday to pattern my dads 10 gauge and what I found may surprise some.

The 10 ga. seems to be way more finicky from shot size to shot size. And from choke to choke.

We used two chokes. A pattern master and a Browning xxfull turkey choke.

The pattern master was terrible. $100 chokes should perform better. At 40 yds there were maybe 20 hits on the target. I stopped using it after the 4th load/ 8th shot.

The best results were from Fed and Winny 2 oz. 6 shot. With the Browning choke.

The best results with the 10 ga. were about the same as the best results with my 12 ga.

The only benifit I see with a 10 is a little lighter recoil.

Definately not worth the hype.

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

I used to shoot my Browning BPS 10ga until I got my Rem 11-87. I have an extended turkey choke on the 10ga, shooting Rem Turkey shells #5. I put almost 40 pellets in the turkey kill zone. I used to reach out to almost 50 yds with great results. Some of the turkeys I shot with it, I was surprised the heads were still attached. Its a great gun with alot of punch. Used to hate patterning that gun. 5 or 6 shots while practicing would leave me with black and blues.

Shot a friends 10 ga. semi-auto once about 8 or 10 years ago. I've tried to forget about it. Don't want something that kills on the business end and wounds on my end every shot. Reminds me of TK & Mike goose hunting. I really don't want to carry a shotgun that heavy several miles through the turkey woods every day either.

I shot my buddies Browning Gold 10 gauge a couple times around 8 years ago. That was enough for me. He doesn't use it anymore either.

Talk about developing a flinch....

WRONG-O!!!!! grin.gif

I have a BPS 10 ga. It's been shortened to 23 1/2". It weighs the same as a BPS 3 1/2" 12 ga. I would take the recoil of the 12 ga. BPS or an 835 any day over the BPS 10. It wears a Comp-N-Choke XXX-full tube and will toss 2 oz. of #6 shot pretty respectably. If you were a gobbler.......would you wanna stand in front of this????

By the way......that's a 45 yard shot. Here's the back of that target.

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

I dont think that the NEF 10ga has as much recoil as the NEF 12ga chambered in the 3 1/2in.......My buddy has the 10 and I have the 12ga,,,The 10ga has 3 more pounds of weight over the 12 mostly all barrel weight both have around 24in barrels,,,But the 10ga has that big thick heavy barrel,,,I would much rather shoot the NEF 10ga all day compared to the NEF 12ga in the 3 1/2............ laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

I have a single shot Stevens 10 ga along with a browning gold ....I have shot the single shot 10 while leaning my shoulder against a rock LOL *ouch* LOL

but I have shot around 2 cases + of 10 ga loads this year alone and I don't mind the recoil ....I think its just the thought of a 10 ga

I will never go back to a 12 unless my 10 ga breaks LOL much much better

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

Wow Strut! Im shooting a standard Mosseberg 500 (Turkey Edition) with the factory turkey choke. With federal Ammo I can hold close to the same pattern at 45! shocked.gif

It isnt quite that tight but it will put just as many in the red! The one and only turkey ive put a hurt on was killed over 40yds. I stepped off 42 and it thumped him!

Ok, not really! grin.gifwink.gif

Seriously, thats a nice pattern for 45yrds. Im not sure I could handle the punishment though. Id rather call them into range, around 25-30yds.

It is a booger to shoot. crazy.gif Hardest kicking gun I ever fired by a good margin. It has split my cheek open twice in turkey hunting situations. shocked.gif That's a little un-nerving. It will do awesome things to a gobbler's head, though. I have not used it much in about 5 or 6 years. Ever since I set up my Super X2, the BPS 10 has seen very little use on turkeys. The SX2 won't throw quite the pattern of the BPS 10. But it's darn close and the shootability of the 3 1/2" 12 ga. auto is way better than a locked-breech 10 ga. And, yep........I much prefer to bust heads at 25 -35 yards, myself. grin.gif

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

The amazing thing is the one bird I have killed was very much over 40-yards. It pelted a barn behind him but never broke through the tin. You should see the spray, its pretty amazing that over 40 yards it still did that damage.

Im going to step back this year and see what it will do at 40yds. I usually pattern around 30-35. A ten gauge will hold an amazing pattern but wow baby. I like my shoulders way to much for that.

Question for you. If im already lethal at 30+ yards with my setup, is there a reason to buy a better choke? Im using the factory choke and I hammered the bird at 42. He literally dropped, flopped, and it was over. He didnt last more then a few flops.

Everyone is into this choke upgrade but if I can lay the hammer down from 30-35 is there really a reason?

No reason at all.......... as long as you vow to limit your shots to that distance. Your gun may well hold a good pattern at 40+ yards where you killed your bird. You may have just gotten lucky. Without actually doing the work at the patterning board at that distance, you'll never know. If you know your pattern to 30 or 35 yards, that's where to limit your shots.........until you pattern at the longer distances.

Re: 10 gauges? Overrated!!!

I just bought a browning gold 10 guage about a year ago and i am in love with the thing. The gun too me just seems so smooth and the patterns are amazing. I am shooting nitro heavyshot 4x5x7 it does the trick on the turkeys for sure. This fall i shot 2 birds one at 55 and one at 65 yards. no problems at all kinda irresponsible but i just had too test it out at that range. I have a grat 12 guage but that is staying in the corner until i cant affod the nitro shells anymore lol. Also i like the 10 alot better for hunting geese.
