I have to give it to everyones fathers, grandfathers or who ever else did this back in the day for their families. my dad has a hydralic log splitter on the back of his tractor. well the other day it broke. So being a nice guy i decided to hand split with an axe some wood for my parents. i am 21 and think im in not bad shape. i split about 10 logs and man did it ware me out. that is definitly some hard work. makes you appreciate how people in the old days did for their families.

Re: Splitting Wood

Worked summers through school tree trimming and splitting wood. Got pretty good at it. Give me a straight piece of oak and I could bust 'em with one hand.

There was a man down the road that used to split wood without using his hands!!!

He'd stick the handle up his butt and do flips.....grin.gif

Re: Splitting Wood

I usually split wood with our splitter during April vacation from school (usually about 10 days). I have been doing it for as many years as I can remember. Everyone else is headed to Myrtle beach and I was headed to the woods. We usually start about 7 in the moning and work until about 5 then go home and stack it all during the night, get back up and do it again. I am the youngest and just happen to be the strongest of our family (lucky me) We cut all the wood for 5 homes that week. It is a long week but it nice to have all the wood cut for the next year.

Re: Splitting Wood

well guys i split some more today. it was kinda fun this time, my dad fixed the hydraulic one so he was using that and i was using the axe. my dad showed me that if i only took out little pieces and not try to split it in half the first time it is easier. it is a good way to get out some aggression (sp?) lol.

Re: Splitting Wood

Old days my right eye!

I grew up splitting wood for the fireplace. I made sure my houses had that electric heat! grin.gif

There are tricks you learn that help. Not using an axe is a good one, another is stay away from "Black Jack."

Id ten to one rather split pine or Oak.
