I got a recurve bow from my neighbor for free, so I was thinking about buying a new string and giving it a shot. I also need a rest any suggestions on the rest and string would be great. I got two recurves one of which is #50 and man is it hard to keep at full draw. The other one is #35 and is manageable. There's a few of trad guys here-I'm sure they'll jump in.AS for string length-gotta know the AMO of the bow.If it's 60",you'll need a 57" string.You'll also need a bow stringer to safely brace and unbrace the bow.007 is right about the weight..Start out lite and if you like it-move up to something a bit heavier.I mostly shoot recurves but I'll string up a longbow every now and then.Here's a few of mine.The 2 Black Widows in the middle is what I do most of shooting with. I CAN NOT stress enough the amount of practice you need shooting a recurve or long bow, no sights and off the shelf. (See Jims shelf with fur or other materials, thats "off the shelf", no mech rest) About a 100x more then your compound would be a fair assessment. Starting low is not super critical but if you dont you most likely will give up on it since it will take that much more time to "get use to the bow weight". Think of a 70# compound at full draw. 22# or around that right? Even a 35# recurve at full draw is a lot more weight. Now think of 50, 65 or more weight. Start low and work up to higher weights. 45# is about most states minimum poundage for hunting, not sure about your state though... Anyways, enough of me... Here my current bows... Custom made for me ChekMate Hunter II 56#@25" 495 grain arrows. Heres a good shot of my shelf with seal skin I put on. Osage Snakey Self Bow 62#@27" Notice how "Snakey" it really is... Originally shot off the knuckle but I build out a thin shelf by sticking layers of leather under the grip leather. You still need to cant it quite a bit.. 20 yards BTW.... GrMntMan is dead on about the amount of practice it takes to become proficient enough to kill game.I try to shoot at least a dozen arrows every day year-round just to stay sharp--more so when the weather gets warmer.And it's not a chore to do so-it's just flat-out fun shooting these things! Shawn,that ChekMate is awesome.Always wanted to shoot one but never had the opportunity.But what's with the little "rubber thingies"? [/ QUOTE ] Ummm...... they are used to help hang the bow on tree limbs. Yea thats it... Hey man, its an old compound thingy. When ya find a product that works as well as LimbSavers, you use then... It helps with hand shock more then noise since they are so close to the riser. But it did reduce some noise too. 17+ years of hi tech wheelie bows sticks with ya some..... Just razzin' ya on the limbsavers-whatever works ,right? and no comment on the carbons--I use 'em too. 007,For years I used Zwickey Eskimo 2-blade 125gr with great results.This year I think I'm gonna shoot the Montec G5's.They seem to shoot really nice with my set-up. Very simular to a Wensel Woodsman design, just not as long. I subscribe to the 3:1 design for a fixed blade head on lower fps shooting bows. 3" long by 1" wide, or ruffly those demensions. Although I had seriously looked the some of those 2 blade Tekans by G5. I know that is almost blastfomy to trad shooters using a mech head, but hear me out.... 2 blade heads penitrate much deer the 3 or 4 blade heads. Fact! Less blade resistance. Yes it would expend 'some' energy opening but they open by sliding back, not hinging open and back, which of the 2, hinges at the front and swing back to deploy is more loss of energy to open then a slide back style. Fact. PLUS it already has a 7/8" solid fixed blade head/point to start the cutting so you would not loose energy to slide the main blade back and open. JMO But I may try these next summer...
