Who still drags their own deer

As I was buying coffee this morning I noticed the photo on the cover of an outdoor magazine. The hunter on the cover was dragging a buck out of the woods with a rope. One thing I noticed was that he was doing it the hard way. I thought to myself, I wonder how many hunters, like myself, still drag their deer out of the woods. I admit that I have a deer cart for one location I hunt. But for the most part I still run the rope through the jaw and drag.

How many of you still drag their deer out of the woods the old fashion way or do you use a 4-wheeler?

Re: Who still drags their own deer

I drag mine out with a rope and stick. I normally have help dragging though, due to disibility and being a female. We've only used our deer hauler one time and that was the 2004 season on a doe I shot 200 yards down the side of a cliff. Took us 3-4 hours with the deer hauler to get her out. I could only imagine what it would have took with just a rope and stick on her. As far as 4-Wheelers go. We don't like disturbing other hunters with the noise of one, it's too rocky and steep to use them off the roads where I hunt, and they are too expensive. Would never be interested in using one for hunting. The only time I'd consider it is if I ever got severely disabled and had to use one or couldn't hunt otherwise.

we have a deer cart and since then we never drag them, the cart is the way to go. If i could use my fourwheeler i would that would be the way to go. We were just talking the other day" my dad and I" SO i asked him what was your best hunting purchace over the last couple of years and hands down it was the deer cart. We get alot of use from it, And when it wears out we will get another one

I usually hunt back in the woods and have to drag them to a field where I can get to them with my truck or a four wheeler.I just wrap the part of my safety harness the goes around the tree, around the deers neck and drag it out that way.

That's the way I do it. It's a lot easier on your back and hands.

i drag mine out, but i wrap the deer in a tarp, makes it much easier. you fold the legs back to make it more streamlined, wrap it up, and drag it out. if you can find some decent sized sticks for they bottom, it helps the tarp last a little longer. where i hunt, there's no way to get a 4-wheeler in to, but i've been blessed with a couple of decent sized mulies. i'll gladly trade hard work for a nice deer smile.gif

Drag them the by hand until they are out of the woods. Once in the field, the 4 wheeler does all the work.

The best doe drag was taught to me by an old timer. Just cut a piece of a stout stick about 10" to 12" long. Then take you knife and puncture the cartlidge in the nose. Insert the stick into one nostril, through the cartlidge, and out the other nostril. Now you have a nice handle to pull by and no head flopping around catching on trees and logs. "Every doe has a built in handle" was what he told me. It works pretty awesome.

Deer cart for me. Here's my hunting partner, Mike, hauling out his 200+ field-dressed whitetail last fall (we took turns). The deer might look smaller than 200lbs field-dressed because Mike stands 6'4".

Re: Who still drags their own deer

Depends on how close I can get to them. I will use the loader bucket on the tractor whenever I can. If that is not an option, will get the 4 wheeler as close as possible. Have had to drag quite a few I could not get either to over the years though. For those drags, it was the old fashioned way.
