Re: Who still drags their own deer

In the areas I hunt in Colorado it is generally too steep or rocky for a game cart. I usualy end up quartering and packing.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

It all depends where I am and who I'm hunting with. I personally do not own a four-wheeler, but my uncles have them and I hunt with them sometimes. But even if I am hunting with my uncles, we can't always haul them out with a 4 wheeler. It all depends what kind of ground and terrain where in, how deep into the bush we are, how much snow there is, etc....

Unless the deer is taken on my own property, I'm into dragging by hand. Most of my hunting is done on state land and ATV's are a no-no. So last year I got a 9 point that the processor estimated at 190#. I'm thinking he was a bit light on the estimate. I had to drag it by myself on level to uphill terrain through a thickly wooded woods. At 61, I probably was not using my best judgement and should have gotten some help. I haven't worked like that in a lot of years. It was three or four steps and then stop and rest. And then three or four more steps and then go back and unhook some sapling that the danged thing snagged onto. Then three or four more steps and lift the critter over a log. I did finally get it to my property line and then used the ATV from there. What a pain in the neck ...... in fact it wound up to be a pain just about everywhere...lol.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

We've always drug my dads deer out. But this year, when me and him both shot a deer on the same day, mine died about 20 yards from a little loggin road in the woods, and my uncle was there hunting as well so he went and got his tractor to drag the deer out. Much easier that way.

Well, really, I was probably being kind of stupid. It wasn't that many years ago that I had a minor stroke, and all that kind of super-exertion probably wasn't the smartest thing to be doing. I guess I must still be in pretty good shape after all. That certainly was a good test....lol.

Rope and a little bit of physical work. It's good to drag your deer, if you're young. I wouldn't recommend it if you were older and had heart conditions. We had a guy not too far from my aunt's house die dragging his deer. He had a heart attack b/c of the great labor it took to drag his deer about a quarter of a mile.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

I drag it far enough to get my 4 wheeler in.

Last December, my buddy got a nice buck and I drug it about 1/4 mile. The snow as too deep to get the atv in. My buddy is over 60 and wasn't much help. smirk.gif

Re: Who still drags their own deer

I'm still a dragger. Lucky for me the last 2 I didn't have to drag real far then the strongest man I know helped me load them. A few years ago shot a big bodied buck way back in the woods, Bushman helped me drag it out 1/2 mile down a little cutline. Not only was Bushman's deer this year big, he's a big strong guy.
