I still drag em out, most of the time around home it's only a hundred yards or so, but in the hills I tend to get pretty far off the main track, worst one so far was two miles.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

Unless the deer is taken on my own property, I'm into dragging by hand. Most of my hunting is done on state land and ATV's are a no-no. So last year I got a 9 point that the processor estimated at 190#. I'm thinking he was a bit light on the estimate. I had to drag it by myself on level to uphill terrain through a thickly wooded woods. At 61, I probably was not using my best judgement and should have gotten some help. I haven't worked like that in a lot of years. It was three or four steps and then stop and rest. And then three or four more steps and then go back and unhook some sapling that the danged thing snagged onto. Then three or four more steps and lift the critter over a log. I did finally get it to my property line and then used the ATV from there. What a pain in the neck ...... in fact it wound up to be a pain just about everywhere...lol.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

I still drag. If I'm hunting my state land, and i'm lucky enough to have come in by boat, we can ussually get the deer to the boat in 45 minutes or so dragging downhill. If it is late season, and the lake is froze, an we come in by truck, it pretty much sucks. We have dragged for almost 4 hours. mostly uphill.

Re: Who still drags their own deer

I'll drag it to where I can load it in a pickup, ATV, or the back of my cart. You sure can't get an ATV into some of the bottoms where I hunt. Why walk (or drag in this case) anymore than you have to with it if you can ride.

When hunting out of state though I have no choice but to drag unless I can use the buddy system.
