Why hunt Coyote's?

Recommended Posts

With all the reading I have done on here about folks going predator hunting, specifically Coyote's. I was just wondering why does anyone hunt them. I mean, from what I have heard, they aren't that good of an eat, so what other purpose is there to hunting them. Is it basically for the pelts. I assume a lot of it is to keep them from bothering a land owners livestock or other wildlife on their property. I was just wondering since I have never myself went predator hunting and don't know anyone else who has.

Definately the challenge, but alo population control. In many areas coyote populations are so dense that it is having a negative impact on animals that share the coyotes ecosystems.

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

The challenge, the pelts, helping the ranchers, helping the pheasants, the deer, the quail, the ducks, the geese, the bunnies, the farmers dogs and cats. Where do I stop.

We cannot get them all and thats the way it should be. They can definately impact the population of all game animals though.

Go call one in and you'll know why. I guarantee it. Gotta love those yotes. Sounds like this may have been a baited question. If fish & game didn't want them shot off there would be tighter regs. Where live they are open year round with no limit. It's a win-win for everybody......except the yotes.

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

it is an awesome rush to have them get up in your face! they are very challenging ,until you do it you just can't believe what it does to a person! I've had guys that have hunted all over the world every kind of game ,FALL to pieces when a coyote comes in! it's incredible!

control is also a good reason! in texas pelts aren't worth squat there is very little pred control ,including varmints! all the other wildlife especially the birds suffer when critter numbers get too high!

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

Population control, they kill a lot of deer fawns, quail, pheasants, and a lot of other small game!

The challenge!

You can hunt them year round, so its something to do when my favorite game is not in season!

The Challenge!!

They are tough, Wiley!

Try it, its a rush like no other I have had hunting.......to become the hunted!

Totally Awesome and a REAL CHALLENGE!!

Why do you suggest that I have some ulterior motive in asking this "baited" question as you put it. I'm just curious as to why some people hunt Coyote's, and as stated before I have never known anyone who has so really have no idea why someone would. The answers I received are basically what I was assuming.

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

No doubt it is a challenge. I have not had much luck here trying to hunt them. We have a problem with the yotes here though and I really need to attempt to thin them some. While they have not gotten any of our calves, I am afraid they are having an affect on the deer population here.

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

I suppose the same question could be asked about crows or woodchucks or rats at the dump or bowfishing for carp. I hunt them because I like to hunt. I'm sure that a whole bunch of other people have the same reason. Basicly, any reason you have for hunting anything applies to hunting coyotes. Food or pelt values are not the only reasons to hunt. At least I hope not or else there are a lot of people who don't realize just what hunting is really all about.

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

If you have ever seen a coyote with mange in -40 weather and black skin and no hair you will understand the need to controal the population, they do take alot of birds up here and small farm animals, they need to be kept at a decent population to make everyoen happy, also they extra 3-5000 bucks I get a winter form doing soemthign I love is enough of a incentive to hunt them!!Most important reason I hunt them is the thrill, having a pack of coyotes coming into your call and thinkign you are the food is the most rewardign huntign experiance I will ever have,

Re: Why hunt Coyote\'s?

Your sitting there next to a cedar tree calling. 300 yds out you see a coyote coming in hard to the call. You get ready and watch him come in thru the scope. He stops 200 yds out and you call again and here he comes again. You smile as you know your going to get a shot at the dog. Your partner is set up 30 yds to your right and you know he is watching the same coyote you are. The coyote is still coming in hard......................you take your rifle off safety and get ready for the shot. Then you hear BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your partner shoots but the coyote your watching is still standing wondering like yourself whats going on..................you put the crosshairs on him and let him have it. Your coyote goes down!!!! You take a second to catch your breath and get up to see your partner walking towards HIS down coyote that wasn't 50 yds from you behind a bush. Now put this all in realtime and this all took place in less than a minute. Your heart is still beating 90 mph and the adrenline rush is like no other. You take the 2 coyotes to the truck and head off to do it all over again. The next 5 stands produce nothing, but your still pumped about the double you called in before. The last stand of the day you decide to take the shotgun instead of the rifle. You call in another coyote and after the shot you step it off. Its a whole 10 yds from where you was sitting to where the coyote is now laying. At 10 yds you were close enough you noticed how the coyote's nose was twitching and working to try its best to pick up any scent there was around, but you did your homework and set this stand up right with the wind in your face.

Tanks of gas - $60

Bag of calls - $50

A day in the field with a buddy calling in coyotes and getting the adrenline rush of a lifetime - PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. You will go back for more!!!
