Novice needing Spin Rod

Ok experience anglers....lead me.

For freshwater, lake / pond fishing... for anything from bass to panfish to catfish....

Looking to get an Ugly Stick, and from advice from friends, sounds like a medium heavy 6'6" 2 piece would be ideal for me. BUT..

to get a 6'6 2 piece, it only goes to Medium.

What am I "losing" by staying down with Medium rather than Medium/ Heavy?

Re: Novice needing Spin Rod

get a 6'6 MH in a one piece that would be better than a two piece unless your needing to pull it apart all the time, the only thing is if your wanting to fish cats, bass and panfish all from one rod your gonna have a tough time, cause you are not gonna want a MH for panfishing that is way to much, need an ultralight, and MH to M your gonna loose lure weight you can use, line wieght your gonna use, reel size, and a two piece is gonna cut down on your sensitivity for bass fishing, for finesse fishing compared to a one piece also staying with a M vs a MH you are gonna be able to fish heavy cover, cause you are gonna need that MH to horse them fish out of the cover

personally, i think a medium action break rod is a great starter rod. you can reef on it a bit, and pull yourself otu of soem pretty heavy cover ... ive done it before ... i still use a medium action rod, its a good all around rod for wahtever fishing ... ive caught everything from 2 inch bass to 25 inch carp on a medium rod. i love havin a medium, and i think that with an ugly stik, you should have no trouble gettin your lures outta heavy cover. Re: Novice needing Spin Rod

IMHO, there is no rod that will go from panfish to catfish. You will need three rods, two minimum!

For bass and catfish you can get away with a medium heavy rod. Just use 10 pound or heavier line. But you will still have to becareful!

Panfish requires a lighter action because they are naturally smaller fish. Lighter bites on a heavier rods will not be detected like a smaller lighter rod. Plus a heavier rod will make it tougher to set the hook as well. With a lighter rod you will use lighter line as well, 4-6 pound test. Allowing you to cast a bit farther and better sensitivity.

Bass Pro Shops have several rods that are medium heavy spinning in two piece. I use the Bionic Blades series. Dumb name but the blanks are built by Fenwick and are the same blanks as the HMG Graphite series. Bass Pro even has them buy two get one free!

Good luck!
