iabow
I will be taking my 10 yr old nephew out on his first hunting trip to bag a turkey. My question is do you think a 1 1/8 oz load of 7 1/2 is good enough to take a turkey and what would you consider the max range on such a light load? It will be 2 3/4" 12 gauge. I'm a little hesitant about using it and thought of throwing in a little heavier load when he shoots but don't want to scare him off. He likes shooting trap loads, just wondering if it's enough. Thank you.

BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: Light Load Effectiveness ? Use some 2 3/4 high velocity 6's ... what choke are you using in that gun ... thats gonna play a big factor in the equation. You should pattern it and find out what it will do with 7 1/2's. Strut10
Re: Light Load Effectiveness ? I would definitely go with #6's in a light load. Remember...... many light loads are running at a pretty high velocity. A #6 pellet at 1300 fps hits just as hard at 40 yards if it came from a 7/8 oz. low brass as it would if it came from a 2 oz. 3 1/2" magnum. I have done a good bit of testing with my wife's 870 and light loads. You'd be amazed at the patterns you can get with some of them!! WaCoyote
Re: Light Load Effectiveness ? I agree about the 6's. However I would not hesitate to shoot a turkey at 30 with 7 1/2 as long as the pattern is tight.
iabow
Re: Light Load Effectiveness ? Thanks guys. I want to use at lest 6s but haven't been able to find any in 1 1/8oz load, only 7 1/2s or smaller. The smallest load of 6s I've been able to find is 1 1/4. He watched me shoot them and decided it might kick to much for him. We're getting a good tight pattern out of a Rem. super full at 30 yds(only reason I'm considering this). Didn't think of the hi velocity loads, they don't kick to hard, I'll have to see if I can find some.
