Question about capes

I have a couple of bucks that I have killed and am going to do just a European mount with. I have another one that I have decided to have mounted, but due to the fact it needs a cape, I have mixed feelings about it. How do you guys feel about using another cape?? Does it seem like its not your deer even though the antlers are since its not the original hide, or does it not matter??

Thanks guys

Ken

Re: Question about capes

I see nothing wrong with it. Sometimes capes get damaged. Heck, how are we to know even if the cape we send in with our deer to the taxidermist is the cape they really use. Unless the deer has a very unique marking somewhere on its cape you cannot tell really.

If it bothers you in your mind though, maybe perhaps hold off on the mount. Save the antlers and stuff. Then try to shoot another buck this coming season from around the same area that you got this buck at. Then use it's cape on your buck's antlers with the mount. That way you can think of it like you at least have a deer from the same bloodline. That might help make it not so mentally disappointing if you're having mixed feelings like this.

I actually keep the capes from all my large bodied deer I shoot and get them tanned with the fur on and store them just for instances like these. I wouldn't have a problem using one their capes on my first buck that I get mounted if its cape is damaged or missing.

I personally don't think I would mix and match antlers and capes, but that's just me. Seems weird to have a deer permantly preserved with some other deer's antlers. JMO...

Its not the antlers I need, it is the cape. I wouldn't mount a cape with someone else's antlers ever. I just had one buck that I originally was not going to have mounted, but have since changed my mind.

I know that...I just said it backwards, but you get the point. It's still the same difference... tongue.gif

It's your rack. Go ahead and have the deer mounted. If it makes you feel any better. Go shoot another deer with the same size or close to the same size ans color and have the taxidermist use that cape. It's the horns that realy matter if you think about it.

Re: Question about capes

I got my buddy Ken's deer mounted with a cape from one of my bucks, Ken. Guys do it all the time and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Don't let anyone tell you different. crazy.gif

As you can see, my buddies original deer cape was a much bigger deer, but he still looks sweet.

Go for it Ken. Most Taxidermist buy capes from hunters for this very purpose.

Re: Question about capes

Coyotes had gotten to my daughters first deer before I found it. The cape was pretty rough, one ear chewed up some, it was unable to be used. So I killed a buck about the same size for the cape, and for the meat too of course. Hope to be getting her deer back pretty soon.
