Mossberg 835 and 535?

Re: Mossberg 835 and 535?

Bore size is the big difference. The 535 is basically a Mossberg 500 with a 3.5" chamber. It has a standard 12 ga diameter .730" bore.

The 835 has a huge .775" bore and was built from the ground up as a 3.5" 12 ga. It was the first 3.5" 12 ga gun back in 1989.

Here is a pic from the Mossberg site. The 835 is on the left and the 535 is on the right.

The larger the bore is the less amount of constriction is needed to get the desired percentage of the pattern. This makes for better patterns and shorter shot strings. For stationary targets like turkeys or deer, it does not mean much, but for wingshooting, it means more shot on the target. The shot cloud is typically thought of as just a 2 dimentional object. In reality it is 3 dimentional and in a cone shape. The shorter the shot string is shorter this cone is and the more pellets are placed in the target.

AJ so you think the 535 would still bve great for turkey hunting? Thats what it would be used for. I have a mossberg 835 paid $350.00 with 2 barrels ect last year. A friends said he seen the 535 with 2 barrels with scope for $299.99 and wanted to buy it but didnt know what the differance was. Thanks!

The turkey will be dead with either. Have your buddy throw both guns up to this shoulder----buy the one that's a better fit. $60 over the lifetime of hunting with the gun isn't anything. But a gun that doesn't fit------it will be replaced but only after a few busted hunts or lost birds. CB

Sure, like Colorado Bod mentioned, have him try both of them and see which one fits better. Its only cheaper if it fits. If it does not fit, it will cost him a lot more. There are tens of thousands of turkeys shot every year by guns with standard sized bores. While it may not be optimum, it is definately functional and acceptable.
