Rifled shotgun barrel versus smooth bore

First off, welcome to the forums. Hope you stick around.

[ QUOTE ]

Can I use sabot slugs in a smooth bore barrel that has a rifled choke?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes you can shoot sabots in a smoothbore with rifled choke. Your accuracy may or may not be acceptable. A saboted slug must spin to be staibilzed in flight. This can only come from rifling. Usually a fully rifled bore is better than just a choke tube. But there some that get good results with just a rifled tube.

Will the rifled choke in a smooth bore barrel improve accuracy or have any benefit?

[/ QUOTE ]

It should. It definately will with sabots. It will impart spin to help stabilize the slug. Anytime you can make something more stable it usually helps accuracy.

[ QUOTE ]

Is there much difference in accuracy between a smooth bore barrel with a slug versus a rifled barrel and sabot slugs?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. It is not uncommon to get 3" groups at 100 yards with sabots from a rifled barrel.

Re: Rifled shotgun barrel versus smooth bore

I would also consider what range I would be shooting and the pattern that your getting befor you spend money. My smoothbore gets about a 2" group at 75 yards. I know that's as far as I'm going to be shooting, so I'm not worried about improving it. If your already getting an acceptable pattern at the range that you'll be hunting, don't waste the money on an unneeded improvement. JMHO

Re: Rifled shotgun barrel versus smooth bore

I used a Rem-Choke barrel with a rifled choke tube for a while and had good results. 2" or less groups at 100 yd. I switched to a fully rifled barrel only because of the shorter length of the rifled barrel. This shoots consistent 1 1/2 " groups @ 100 yds. An improvement but for accuracy alone it wouldn't be worth the extra $ Incidently, I'm Using Winchester Supreme sabot slugs 2 3/4"

Re: Rifled shotgun barrel versus smooth bore

From experience, if you can get rifled chokes for your smooth bores, do it and use rifled slugs. You might have to try a few different ones out for the best accuracy, but I used this combo for years with great results ( dead deer ) LOL. I did move on to a fully rifled barrel, but I think for the distances I shot, I probably could of stayed with what I had and been fine. smirk.gif
