is that a northern pike?!? i thought it was just a pickeral....

I think they're the same fish. In the northern states they tend to get a lot bigger and they're called Northern Pike. Down south, about 3 - 4 pounds is as big as they usually get and they're typically called Chain Pickeral. Not sure, but they may be different sub-species.

Chained pickerel is different than a Northern Pike.

I didn't think Northerns got that far south. Maybe someone caught it up north and set it free down south?

Pickerel

Northern Pike

The two are closely related, but they are different species.

The natural distribution of the chain pickerel extends into the southern states including where you are.

I'm betting that is a pickerel.

Re: What kinda fish is this?

yup, it's a pickerel: They are a different species, but in the northern states the "northern pike" and "Chain pickerel" are one in the same....As soon as you hit the Canadian border a "northern Pike" is considered either a "jack" or Jackfish", a Pickerel in Canada is what we call a walleye in the states. That fish is 100% a "pike" whether it be a chain pickerel, or a northern pike.

Very common around here....and that guy is a little one, very good fighter, and awfully slimy!

Chain pickeral / Jackfish. Fun to catch. Great to eat.

Favorite way to catch them is with a gold and black broken-back Rebel. Walk the dog technique works great...they can't stand it!!!! grin.gif And also with live shiners. These fish are very aggressive and put up a fantastic fight.

They are my favorite ( besides catfish) to fish for in the summer. cool.gifcool.gif

Here's the one on our wall. 7 pounds and something.

confused.gif Shaun that Pike from Northern Ontario Sure look alot like one we caught at our lodge in Northern Manitoba ... The guy holding the fish looks Familiar to confused.gifmikepike5.jpg

I never said that specific fish was from Northern Ontario, I just said that we have big ones up there. I googled for a pic of a big pike and that was the nicest pic I found, so I posted it for an example of a big pike. After I re-read my post, it does sound like I meant that it was from here, but I honestly didn't mean for it to sound that way, I should have been more clarifying... sorry for the misunderstanding. wink.gif

That's neat that it was caught at your lodge though! Congrats to the guy that caught it, nice fish. cool.gif
