QDMAworks4me
Re: A few of my racks [ QUOTE ] QDMAWRKS: I would really like to know how you did those!!! They look awesome! Many of the bucks I have shot, I didn't want to mount, but would love to make them look like that: I ONCE and only ONCE tried to boil the head to get this result, and all it did was make my pot turn brown, and kept anyone from visiting me for weeks: Even after I was used to the horrible smell....people would stop by and comment on the stench!!! I had deer hair everywhere, and it just didnt' work!!! I would like to know how you did it. Post here, or better yet P.M. or email me and let me know how you got those puppies so clean!!! Great pics! Help???? [/ QUOTE ] Birddog, Sorry it took so long to respond I used a turkey cooker and a large cooking pot (the pot is only used to boil skulls) on the deck of my house. First of all I had to take off as much skin and detach the spine and jawbone. Once you have as much of the excess hide and bone off, you need to boil for about 1 and a half hours. Pull the skull out of the water let it drip off and start taking off as much of the cooked layer of skin off as you can, I used a wire brush that I found in the paint isle of our local Ace hardware. I also used my pocketknife. This is the tool that I actually used for most of it. Scraping the skin off seemed to be easier than trying to brush it off but I would suggest having both on hand. You keep putting the head back into the water and repeating the process until all the skin and hide is off. The toughest part is the brain cavity. There are two small bones that I took a screw driver and popped them out making a bigger hole so I could get a screw driver or anything else that I could fit down in there to get it out. After I got most of the big stuff out I used a hose or something that has a little pressure to shoot in the brain cavity and get the small stuff out. After you have everything finished the way you want let it dry for a few days and I do not like the bleached look so I actually use peroxide. Spread it on with a toothbrush and let it dry overnight. It will bring out some white but it won’t be so white that it looks fake. If anyone one has anymore questions I would love to help out, but I will tell you when you are getting ready to do this plan a hole day because that is what it takes. I was working on that and a bunch of other stuff so it worked out pretty good. Thanks for the positive feedback QDM

Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: A few of my racks Nice job! It's also interesting to look at the skulls. Not every deer is created the same and that goes all the way to the bone that supports the antlers we love to see.
