Re: which caliber for me?

Why just one rifle?

No, IMO neither is ideal. But are excellent starting points.

If it were me I'd buy the 7mm for everything except the moose and grizzly/brown bear. For those I'd step up to a .338 mag. Is the .338 totally necessary? maybe, maybe not. But thats where I'd start for the big-uns.

Welcome to the forums.

The 30-06 will indeed work for all of the game you mentioned. Its definately a good place to start. While its not the optimum rifle for all of the critters you mentioned, its well suited for most of them and if you can afford to go on all of those hunts, you can buy different rifles.

Re: which caliber for me?

Buy a 30.06. With todays premium bullets it will kill anything above you mentioned. The 06 has a bullet selection from 100 grains all the way up to 220.

If you can get a copy of Petersen's Hunting magazine. They have a great article in this month's edition called "The 30.06 Turns 100" & several guys who favor it over anything else. One gentleman in the article has killed every species of game in N America with it, including walrus & polar bear. Not only that but he's killed nearly every species of deer sized game in Africa with a 30.06 including zebra. The only thing he doesn't recommend hunting with it is lion, hippo, elephant & the african water buffalo.

Re: which caliber for me?

I've used my 30/06 Remington 700, for elk, deer, black bear, antelope, mtn goat, bighorn sheep & mtn lion-------all here in Colorado. I'll use it for moose if I ever draw a tag for a Shiras. I use 180 grain bullets for everything except antelope then I drop down to a 150 grain.

But I've got a buddy who uses a 7 Mag again in a Model 700 without a problem on the same list of animals here in Colorado.

If you can afford a grizzly hunt----get another rifle.

Last piece of advice is top the rifle witha good piece of glass. I like the Leupold VX II - 3x9 - 40 MM. But you should also look at a Nikon Monark again in a 3x9--40 MM. I would not look at anything less. But if you want to spend more a Zeiss or Swarovski are both 1st rate. CB

Re: which caliber for me?

The .30-06 is more economical but the 7 mm has a little more wallop. Not enough difference to get in a tizzy over. My personal preference is the '06 but probably because I have several and don't have a 7 mm.

Bullet selection for the '06 is greater than for the 7 mm as the .06 can offer .55 gr. to .220 gr. bullets which makes it very adaptable for any use.
