Guest MissouriHunter
I have been looking at getting a new rifle. I am thinking about a 30-06, 270, or a 25-06. Which one do you think or is there a better rifle out there? I am looking for something that will go through some brush but shoot long distances and shoot flat. strubedog
Re: What is the best deer rifle? I would opt for a 270 or better yet 280. I hated my 30-.06 and have since sold it. Wasn't a very flat shooting gun. Read AJ's review of the 280. It is what I shoot and love it.
OJR
Re: What is the best deer rifle? 270 all the way! I am now using my 3rd one. It is a Tikka, T3 and it is great! Forget this nonsense of a "brush gun" or shooting through brush. Nothing will do that! Shot a buffalo with it and will start deer hunting with it this weekend. johnf
Re: What is the best deer rifle? I have a 25-06 and seriously considering trading it for a 270. My main reason is simple. The availability of shells for a 25-06 is very limited. Most places I go have no choice, and that's if they carry any at all. The 270 shoots a little flatter than the 30-06 passed 300 yards. I'm a small guy and don't want all the recoil of a 30-06. The difference isn't much between the two, but I've got arthritis in my sholders, and every little bit counts. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: What is the best deer rifle? 30-06 of the 3 you listed, a bolt action for the rifle. The one that fits you. I like Tiika but in all honesty you can't go wrong with any of them--Ruger, Rem , Win , Sav or Browning. I like the 30-06 because it's never a bad choice for anything you can hunt. Shoots flat for antelope & hits hard for elk. Someday you'll go on a hunt for them & the 30-06 is up to the job. I would also give the 308 Winchester a serious look. Packs the punch of the 06 but less recoil Last piece of advice is get a good scope. Leupold is the only one for me. A good choice is the Var X-II 3x9

wtnhunt
Re: What is the best deer rifle? The one you are most comfortable with shooting. Any of those three would do the job well on a deer. Personally I shoot a model 700 in .270 and been very happy with it.
hutchies
Re: What is the best deer rifle? Remington makes a managed recoil shell for the .30-06 and it only has like an 8 lb kick compared to a 21 lb kick normally. And it will probably shoot flatter because it only uses 130 grain shells. VTbowman
Re: What is the best deer rifle? I am actually surprized to see not as many suggest the 30.06. I know the .06 and .270 are the most popular calibers. All you listed will work. I use a Rem 300 ultra mag. Some say its over kill, but how much more dead can drop dead be...?? LOL If shot in the shoulder area, the only direction a deer will travel is down. Proof positive for all mine so far...
LifeNRA
Re: What is the best deer rifle? First thing to consider is what kind of shooting will you be doing? The .30-06 will give you the best choices in ammo, then the .270. There is not many choices in ammo for the 280 around here. If I were to buy only a rifle JUST for deer. I would get the 270. I have a Browning Medallion in 270 and love it. But if I were to buy another rifle, I would get the .30-06. Only reason being it would be good for varmits to bear! Lots of choices in ammo! Me personally, I would make sure you get the bolt action as well. The super mags rifle in my mind are too much for deer. I have had friends blow out the front shoulder on deer, because he was using a 7mm mag! This a a touchey subject because everyone has their own favorites! Whatever decision you make remember, shot placement is the most important thing!!! One well placed shot is a lot better the the mind blowing, shoulder killing recoil from any supermag!!! Just my 2 cents!

Guest 9point
Re: What is the best deer rifle? I have 2 30-o6's rem 270 rem 243 savage 7mm and 300. One Marlin 444 and One marlin 1895 G in 45-70. The 1895 is by far my favorite one. I leave for Sunday for WV gun season and she will be going with me. Nothing beats a big bore lever gun. I put a Burris 3x9 on it also. Nice check em out
robk
Re: What is the best deer rifle? i tried the 25-06 and it wasn't for me but it's always good to try something new even in calibers but since it didn't work out like i thought it should i went back to my 30 caliber and grabbed up a 308 barrel for my encore and remember why i have always loved the 30 caliber gun. in a matter of 20 shots i was shooting qurter size groups at a 100 yards and i know my confidence level jumped way up off the scale and i know i can go out tomorrow and bust a deer out to 300 yards tomorrwow if i had the hsot. i believe with all my heart that it is confidence you want to have when hunting and i know for me the 308 is going to be my rifle good luck to all this gun season and be safge please!!!! rob k
billygoat
Re: What is the best deer rifle? The 30-06 and .270 are strong picks... if you want to be a little different, consider the 6mm, super flat, super fast... good luck and happy shopping. too_pointer
Re: What is the best deer rifle? Hello Kyle. Even shotgun slugs will be affected by brush. I wouldn't think about anything busting through brush, wait for the better, open shot. Lots of great opinions in here. I have had 30-06, .270, .284, 30-30, and some more. I currently own a .270 and I prefer that for less recoil, and a flat trajectory. Anything suggested in here would work fine for you. Some are much better at longer distances than others. A 30-06 offers a good variety of different grains bullets, and is real popular. I moved away from it because a .270 has less recoil and is just as effective at the ranges I shoot. Are you really asking what is the best calibur? If you want the best deer rifle, it depends alot on what action you want ( semi-auto, lever, bolt, ect.) too_pointer
bigblueraptor
Re: What is the best deer rifle? i use a 270 short mag flat trajectory of a 270 and the knock down of a 30-06 my .
