Big Bowfin

I took my 3 year old boy fishing Sunday afternoon figuring we may catch some crappie and small bass. I rigged is little Zebco rod and reel for him with a crappie jig tipped with a small minnow and put a cork above it. Well he's throwing rocks in the pond behind us when his cork goes down. I set the hook for him and tried to get him to reel in the fish. Well the fish was more than I thought it was and he didn't want anything to do with it. After a long battle several close calls of the 8 lb line almost breaking I finally got the fish in and it ended being a Bowfin that was probably near 8lbs. It was a fun fight but he will never swim in that pond again. We ended up catching 6-7 bass and I did catch one that went 6.1 lbs on a Strike King Bleeding Bait Series spinnerbait. She was fat as a toad and was in the back of a cove in about 2' of water. I was hoping my boy would get in on the pictures but he wasn't too sure about those big fish. Guess I should have started him out catching Bluegills instead of 6 lb bass and 8 lb Bowfins. LOL Here are a couple pics.

I hate to sound stupid, but what is a bowfin, what's it related to? Do you eat those? I see the pic. but have never seen or heard of those befor.

Bowfin are considered "rough" or "forage" fish, they're pretty nasty, and no, you don't eat them. Bottom feeders. We used to catch them in Florida if they didn't cut your line. They call them mudpuppies down there.

Here's a pretty informative site on them.

Re: Big Bowfin

I've heard of people eating them but I wouldn't. They're not just bottom feeders either... they will eat anything. I've caught them on topwater baits before. They are kind of a pre-historic fish. Lots of teeth and mean as heck! They are fun to catch but will eat every fish in the pond if they can get it in their mouth!

Ask Andrea (huntin-girl), she eats carp, so she might have a good recipe for 'em grin.gif

sorry Andrea, I just had to LOL!!!

Nah, I don't eat carp. but I'd try some!!!

We call those mudfish here in Florida. I have caught some averaging 10-12 pounds. No good to eat, but they are FUN to fight.

They are a very very bloody fish. They eat just about everything too. They will bite your crickets, worms, cut bait and even hit top water plugs. We usually shoot the ones we catch and toss them on shore for the coons and bobcats to eat. Nasty boogers. crazy.gifsmirk.giftongue.gifgrin.gif
