wtnhunt
For annuals, how late do you guys leave in your old fall/winter plots before prepping them for new spring plots. I got a bit of a dilemna in that one of our fall plots(a mix of rye grain, wheat, and a fall blend from pennington with oats clover and rye), never really took off in the fall due to lack of moisture. Now that plot is really coming on great though, and I am thinking it will be a great draw for turkey season. I am thinking of holding out until later in May, after turkey season ends, to work that ground and get it ready for planting beans and peas with sorghum. How late would you wait? FSU_Seminole
Re: How late? Nothing is wrong with what you're planning to do. You can plant beans & peas in May with no problem. Your deer may not eat the oats right now but they'll be all over the clover & rye that should sustain them. My sistuation is somewhat like yours. I only get to plant fall annuals but where I hunt the land is farmed with corn and soybeans. When she's planting soybeans I usually spray my food plots with round up in mid april then she plants beans the second week of May. Year before last she didn't plant beans until the first week of June. May should be fine because June & July are the months in which antlers grow like deer have been shot up on steroids or something. [/ QUOTE ] If we have good rainfall my clover plots should be doing really well through the summer. That would help out with does nursing fawns and with helping bucks get some extra protein.
