Last night at the hunter's ed. class they were saying that you should NEVER gobble when hunting turkeys. ( Cause another hunter could mistake you for a tom) confused.gifcrazy.gif

I've never hunted turkeys so I didn't know that.

What are the gobbler calls used for then????

Re: Don\'t gobble??

If your hunting public ground it is definitely NOT a call you would want to use, for the fact of having someone try to sneak up on the "gobbler" and end up mistaking you for him.

If your hunting private property I think you still need to be careful but can certainly use it.

I was told you shouldnt use em in public hunting areas, just because of those stupid people like said above. But i use them a lot and they have worked wonders for me.

Re: Don\'t gobble??

huntin_girl I'll use a gobble call to call in those onry ol' gobblers that just won't come in to a hen call. The ones that tend to hang up and won't come a step closer are the ones I'm talking about. Sometimes all else fails when a gobble call will either have them coming to join buddies, have them come in to beat another gobbler out of a hen they've been hearing, which was the hunter, or does not either help or hurt the situation.

I would never use a gobble call on public land for pure safety reasons. On private property where another hunter moving in on me is the least of my concerns, that's another thing. I'll use one in a heartbeat if my arsenal of hen calls fails to do the trick. It's made the difference on several occasions between leaving the field a dejected turkey hunter or celebrating trickin a gobbler for me and some buddies I was helping out by doing a little calling for them. wink.gif

Locating other gobblers. Works good too.

On private land i see no reason why u shouldnt use them. but on public land u may have somebody stalking u. (that aint good) grin.gif

This is exactly correct. Gobble calls do make excellent locators if you are hunting property where you are reasonably sure you will not be stalked by an "Idiot." Notice I didn't say "Another hunter."

Re: Don\'t gobble??

I've been useing gobble calls for 22 years on turkeys, only got shot once. Fortunatley the gentleman that did the shooting wasn't real good a judging distance, cause I was definatley out of range. Boy could that dude run, LOL he was picking them up and putting them down when I stood up and started voicing my opinions. LOL Oh yeah the question, Only use a gobble call on land you know your on by yourself. Good Luck

And when you use it on land you know your on by yourself, don't take it for granted that your alone on the property. I many times had folks stalk birds on to my property thinking nobody was around. They didn't even see the posted signs on every other tree. Idiots are idiots becarefull with the gobble call where ever you chose to use it.

Wigs
