dartonman
I love shooting varmints...mainly groundhogs, ground squirrels, crows, squirrels, and an occasional coyote or fox......what gun would be in the two choices....I am ignorant on both calibers, but most of my buddies have shot a 17hmr and was very impressed by the accuracy.....thoughts, and comments please........al
Guest gfourhunter
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me i have both 17hmr and the mach2. the mach2 would be a good tree rat gun and target gun. thats about it. its verry accurit. the 17hmr is a verry accurit gun also its a 22mag necked down to a .17. it will kill a yote but dont shoot for the shoulder. i use one when hunting yotes at night. at night we are shooting the eyes of a yote so it does the job there. i have lost some yotes with a body shot with a .17hmr. now when i use my 243 with 58g Hornady V-Moly they hit the ground with one shot. AJ
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me Hey Al, Since you have added groundhogs, foxes, and coyotes, I too would lean towards the HMR. It gives the extra velocity that is needed to help the little 17 gr bullet do its job in bigger bodies. It can be plenty accurate. Here is my thread on my CZ 452 Varmint. I would not hesitate to use the 17HMR on targets to 150 yards, on small varmints to 150 yards, groundhogs to 100-125 yards, and coyotes to 75 yards. The cartridge is accurate enough to place the bullet where it needs to go, if the shooter can do the job. It is a bit sensitive to the wind though. When you decide on a certain gun, try each type of ammo and see what it likes best. Mine hates the 20 grain stuff.
LETMGROW
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me For the life of me ,I don't understand why they came out with the Mach 2 version anyway. Useless IMO.
too_pointer
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me It seems like there isn't alot going for the 17 mach 2 Is there a big difference in price between the mach 2 and the hmr, or is one much more accurate than the other ? too_

Everyone already has a .22, so why get the same thing with a smaller bullet? Not everyone has a .22 mag, and the .17hmr's are getting a lot more publication than them, thats why everyone is goin for the hmr's. I think.lol. too_pointer
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me My question is still is one more costly for ammo and what about accuracy between the 2 too_
AJ
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me Personally, I too see no reason for the 17M2. It lacks the range and power of the 17 HMR and is a lot more expensive to shoot than the 22 lr. Ammo for the 17M2 runs about $6-$7/box of 50. The ammo for the 17 HMR is $9-$10/50 so it costs 50% more but you can get decent 22 lr ammo for $10/500 and 22 magnum ammo runs $7-$9/50. The 17M2 is capable of very good accuracy, as is the 17 HMR and 22 magnum. As for performance and ballistics here is the data: Code: Muzzle 50 Yards 100 Yards 150 Yards 200 Yards . .17 Mach 2, 17-Gr. V-Max Velocity 2100 1799 1530 1304 1134 Energy 166 122 88 64 49 Trajectory -1.3 0.7 0 -4.4 -14 . .17 HMR, 17-Gr. Am I reading this right that the poi is at 100 yards.and dead-on at 100 ? The 17 hmr looks pretty good right now. too_
AJ
Re: .17mach2 or 17hmr I dont know what is best 4 me Yep, this assumes all cartridges are zeroed at 100 yards. Did you notice the 22 lr has more energy from 100 yards and farther from the heavier bullet? The 22 Mag is also delivers a bit more energy out to 115 yards.
