AJ
In 1999 Hornady and Steyr released a new cartridge that was a joint development between the two companies. Jeff Cooper was spouting about all the great benefits of the scout style rifle. Steyr and Hornady decided to make a thumper round that will work in the Steyr carbine. The result was the 376 Steyr, a cartridge that pushes big .375” diameter bullets at moderate but useful speeds and can be chambered in most standard length actions. The new cartridge uses a proprietary case design meaning it is a new cartridge design, not just another cartridge necked up or down. The cartridge has not had a big following here in the USA and barely has a handhold on life. It is fairly popular in Africa and Europe on the other hand. SSK Industries offered Encore barrels chambered for this large cartridge. I have been fortunate enough to shoot one of the original versions. It is a handful. The drawback to owning a gun chambered for an uncommon round is finding ammo. Hornady is the only company offering factory loaded ammo. Handloaders can have a ball with this round as empty brass is available from Hornady and loading data is available from Hornady and Hodgdon. Factory loads offer a reduced load 225 grain bullet traveling 2600 fps or a 270 grain bullet going the same speed. Handloaders can boost the speed of the 225 grain load another 300 fps. The numbers are like this: Code: 225 gr 275 gr 225 gr Handload 100 +2.0" +2.0" +2.0" 150 +1.3" +1.5" +1.8" 200 -1.5" -0.7" 0 250 -6.6" -4.8" -3.6" 275 -10" -7.6" -6.2" 300 -14.4" -11" -9.4" At 250 yards, both of these loads are still delivering over 2000 ft/lbs of energy. To give you an idea of this performance, the proven and time tested .375 H&H magnum is only 100 fps faster than the 376 Steyr with 270 grain loads. This cartridge has been proven on Africa's large plains game like the eland, warthog, kudu, and dangerous game like the cape buffalo. It can also be chambered in a standard length action.
