Guest ronin
Hey guys...I'm thinking about buying a new varmiter in 17 Rem. I'm looking at the Remington 700 Light Varmit with fluted barrel or CZ's 527. Any thoughts on either?
AJ
Re: 17 Remington It's a sweet cartridge! I love my 700 BDL in 17 Rem. I bought it back in 1998 and I have shot a lot of ground squirrels in CA, groundhogs and crows here in VA with it. Nothing like putting the crosshairs on the target and watching the bullet impact. Its pretty sweet. The drawback to the .172 caliber is the need to have special equipment. You need a special .17 cal cleaning rod and a loading funel. Loading some of the longer grain powders like IMR 4320 can be a pain as the granuals don't like to flow in the little hole. Berger makes very nice .17 cal bullets for this cartridge. Personally, I prefer the 30 grain for long range shooting. As far as the guns go, both have the 1:9" twist so you can use bullets up to 30 grains. So there is no real gain there by either side. The CZ's price is a lot lower than the Rem. I have a 527 American in .222 Rem and it shoots decent groups. The drawback to the CZ is the detachable magazine. I personally prefer a hidden internal magazine for better lines. You also have to use the special rings with the CZ. Another nice gun is the Cooper 21. It's a little higher than the Rem but its a custom gun and its guaranteed to shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

Guest ronin
Re: 17 Remington Thanks, AJ. Just the info I needed. I saw some Coopers listed on GunsAmerica recently. I'll check 'em out again.
AJ
Re: 17 Remington [ QUOTE ] How is the 17's knockdown power on yotes? [/ QUOTE ] No cartridge has knockdown power on game. It will kill them very rapidly if that is what you mean. The bullet will not exit and its like a grenade going off inside them. I have seen a video of a bobcat being shot by a 17 Remington and it ballooned up like it was going to burst but shrunk and just fell over. I would not hesitate to use it on coyotes out to 300 yards. You do have to shoot them in the vitals. If you gut shoot them its just like gut shooting a deer.
