slugshooter
Been hearing a lot of chatter on the news and reading in the paper about how many members of the Republican party are beginning to distance themselves from Bush especially this being an election year. I heard this morning about Senator Mike Dewine being at a fundraiser with the President and not wanting to be photgraphed with him. Many members also are increasingly becoming frustrated with the "do it alone" attitude of the White House without Congressional input. Senator Thune was handpicked and pressured to run against Tom Daschle, one of his campaign commitments was to fight to keep Ellsworth AFB open in South Dakota. When the BRAC lists came out Thune claims the White House did nothing to support him and even reports a White House staffer asked him why he was "Whining". What are you guys' thoughts on this and does this spell trouble for the Republican party with the upcoming Congressional elections?
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: The Republican Divide Although I am Republican, I think the Repulicans don't have a chance on this green earth to win in 08'. I think they are done for a while. The Dems are going to promise to bring the boys back in a timely fashion and that's going to be enough to win the election. I also think that if the 04' elections were held today, you would see a different outcome. A lot of things came to light since the 04 election
jdickey
Re: The Republican Divide Probably does, but is not too surprising and nothing that hasn't been done in the past. Our MEDIA FRIENDS make this into something new and unique, but it is old hat politically. For some, President Bush has been too CONSERVATIVE, for others he has been too LIBERAL! But what else is new, the GOP was that way going into the last elections! But united against Kerry - the country obviously did not want Kerry. Traditionally, those now up for re-election and those running, have to find some way to make themselves stand out in front of their constituents - and what better way than to bash a President in his last term! What one of our media friends said before... no matter what positive things are being accomplished.... the media will focus on all the negatives.... and completely overlook all the negatives of the previous administration. It's a CATCH -22! But it's not new!
ParrotHead
Re: The Republican Divide Well so far, the left has proven themselves too incompetent to take advantage of anything so is it going to matter at election time? I doubt it.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: The Republican Divide Generaly, I don't think it helps any party to have dissention in the ranks. However, in the case of some type of wrong doing, I think it helps reduce the fallout to the rest of the party if a certain amount of distance is placed between other members and the "wrong doer". So far, no one with any credibility has accused the President of any type of crime, the other Republicans are running scared strictly on the basis of poll numbers (which I suspect are being artificially driven down by the media). [/ QUOTE ] I really hope you are wrong there Mike, but am afraid you are probably right. If this country elects Clinton or Gore to office in 08, we are in far more trouble than we have ever been in before in my lifetime. The idea of either of them being in control of(notice I dont say leading) this country scares the crap out of me.
stevebeilgard
Re: The Republican Divide we can't believe what we see and hear on the news. it's all geared anti bush, and put into the negative. the republicans may well lose in 2008. we'll get a taste of that this year. any republican candidate who does not snuggle up to bush in 2006 is a fool and, probably a looser too. we'll know more in 6 monts. but, i think sluggo is wrong here. time will tell. Yellowhammer
Re: The Republican Divide The dems will be in office in 08, they could put a cow patty on the dem ticket and still win. There is no way that a rep will win, this country is tired of Bush and his party and who ever is on the dem ticket will be the next president. God help us all. johnf
Re: The Republican Divide I think 9/11 and Iraq has done for Bush what the oil embargo and the Iran Hostages did for Carter in the late 70's. Carter was actually a very effective president but will be remembered as a weak ineffective president. I think because of 9/11 and the enigma that is Iraq, the presidency of JW Bush will go down in history as a bleak falure
