rifleman25
I'm wanting to buy a savage model 99 as I blieve it is one of the best hunting rifles made. I really want the 308, but I'm finding most of the ones for sale to be chambered for 300 savage. What I want to know is, What is the difference between 308 win and 300 savage in ballistics, preformance, and trajectory?

johnf
Re: How much difference is their really? You can also go on Winchester.com to check the balistics. If I remember correctly the 300 savage is very close, balistically, to the 30-30 winchester. This is significantly less thump than the 308 and not nearly the down range ability. I would go with the 308 hands down over the 300 savage.
David_218
Re: How much difference is their really? My Cousin, who lives in Washington State, has used the Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage for hunting Deer, Bear, and Elk. It hasn't failed him in any of his hunts. Prudent shot placement as well as proper Bullet weight is the key to success with this or any other cartridge.
AJ
Re: How much difference is their really? Here ya go comparing 150 and 180 gr loads: Code: 300 Savage 150 gr Path Energy 100 +2.0" 1832 150 +1.5" 1647 200 -0.8" 1478 225 -2.7" 1398 250 -5.1" 1322 275 -8.0" 1250 300 -11.5" 1180 . 300 Savage 180 gr Path Energy 100 +2.0" 1780 150 +0.9" 1593 200 -2.3" 1422 225 -4.9" 1342 250 -8.0" 1266 275 -11.9" 1194 300 -16.3" 1124 . 308 Win 150 gr Path Energy 100 +2.0" 2280 150 +1.9" 2113 200 +0.5" 1955 225 -0.8" 1879 250 -2.5" 1806 275 -4.5" 1735 300 -7.0" 1667 . 308 Win 180 gr Path Energy 100 +2.0" 2352 150 +1.6" 2173 200 -0.4" 2000 225 -2.1" 1925 250 -4.2" 1848 275 -6.7" 1773 300 -9.8" 1700 If you are shooting deer within 250 yards, you really will not see a difference. Both cartridges will kill deer just as dead as the other can. If you step up to elk, the .308 Win pulls ahead quickly.
Shaun_300
Re: How much difference is their really? My uncle has a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. He's had it all his life and has killed MANY deer with it. I have shot it a number of times, and I can't really tell the difference between that and a .308, both are excellent cartridges for hunting deer. Like AJ said, if you're going to be hunting elk, caribou, moose, or other game bigger than a deer, I would take the .308 over the .300 Savage. iron buck
Re: How much difference is their really? I have several 99s. In both 300 Savage & 308. I have used them on deer & see no differance between the two rounds in their "on game performance". If you hand load you can close the gap even further. The only problem with 99s is that they cost more & more each year! But they do make great hunters if you can find them.
