Re: deer vitamins?

I got this recipe off of this site a couple of years ago. Not sure who originally came up with it.

WHITETAIL DEER HOMEMADE MINERAL MIX RECIPE

Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.

Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loose kind without the medications.

Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt

Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

Keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use. Mix all together well.

Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

Mix your all of mineral mixture with the soil except for about 2 pounds.

Water area lightly – about 2 gallons depending on how wet the soil is to begin with.

After watering, let dry for an hour then scatter the remaining 2 pounds on top of the spot.

Maintenance:

Replenish in 6 months with fresh supply of mineral, and then annually each year there after.

The Di-calcium helps build the deer’s antlers, but they won't eat it unless it is mixed with the salt, the directions above gives the perfect mixture.

The best time to put it out is March/April, but anytime will work.

Put all 200 lbs in one hole.

Works best if there’s a water source nearby.

Create 1 mineral lick to every 100 acres.

Re: deer vitamins?

Oh come on. You guys don't really feed your deer vitamins do you? Seriously? Are you trying to supplement deer food resources or running a goat farm .... lol. Don't you think that is getting just a bit carried away? You guys are going to go broke trying to raise a wild herd with that level of detail. What do you suppose those deer are worth per pound? I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck, but just how far do you go in manufacturing your deer? Seems like there comes a point where you spend so much money that you had better be getting some income off of them just to keep people from questioning your sanity....lol.

Re: deer vitamins?

I guess I'm like the guy who collects art. I spend a fortune on something just to look at. grin.gif

Right now I feed about 7 tons of supplemental protein pellets per year and another 3 or 4 tons of corn. This is the 3rd year of supplemental feeding and the results are really starting to show. We've got a lot of 2.5 year old 8 and 10 points that will score 125 - 135 and most of our 3.5 year olds go between 135 and 150. Of course there are also 600+ acres of food plots on the ranch and we've been intensively culling undesirable bucks and does.

I just enjoy going hunting and watching and videoing 5 or 6 nice bucks every time I go. Even if I don't shoot anything, and I usually don't, it's still a blast.

Not really vitamins, but supplemental minerals yes, I do put out minerals Doc. Minerals per year spent for the deer probably cost me less than $50, and I am buying them for our livestock too anyways.

Re: deer vitamins?

Vitamins are a good question, so maybe I'll post here. Ruminants get plenty of vitamins from their natural feed as long as there is live green stuff to eat (where they get vitamins A and E) and plenty of sunshine (from which they make vitamin D). During winter, they might benefit from a moderate dose of vitamins, but it is hard to know and difficult to do it. Most vitamin ingredients are not very stable especially when exposed to the elements. Some companies have vitamin ingredients that are encapsulated, but I don't know how much that helps for sure. The vitamin levels in many commercial deer minerals are sort of weak...looks like they 'have everything in there', but the actual levels are very low.

No, I don't work for a deer mineral company.
