Im going to pic up another deer rifle in 30-06. My first intention was to get a NEF. Ive changed that and Im back to looking at Bolt guns. I had a Rem 700 and loved it. Is the 710 comparable or would It be worth the money to chip in another $100 on the 700?

Ill be taking 200yd shots, Max. Most of my shots have always been around 100 or less. This will be nothing more then an deer hunting rig.

Thanks!

Re: Remington 710?

Chip in the extra money and get the 700. The 710 is a cheaply made model and I have several friends that bought them. The bolt seems to get extremely loose after a while and one of them had problmes with a clip that holds the magazine. For the extra bucks the 700 has been tested over and over and always performed well.

Re: Remington 710?

If your looking for a utility bolt I would also consider the Mossberg ATR 100. They are less then the 710 but don't have the crappy $20 scope on them. They come with pre mounted scope rings and seem to be markedly better quality that the 710. I've talked to several people who have them, and they all love them. Most have reported 3/4-1" groups at 100 yards using factory ammo.

Re: Remington 710?

Ive actually looked at that mossberg. They are nice guns.

Had I not owned a rem700 for several years I would probably have really considered that. The old 700 I had was a TACK driver. I never lost a deer at any distance to that gun.

The only other gun im considering is the Savage. Arent they the one with the AcuTrigger?

Re: Remington 710?

I have a 710 in 30-06 which I bought for a poor weather gun to hunt with. Frankly it was cheaper than some others so I didn't expect top quality. I will say it exceded my expectations as it is very accurate, handles to MY liking and is very reliable. I changed the scope the day after I bought it and up graded it to a Simmons Atec. Pretty good combination,I think.I normally hunt with my 7600 or 7400 but both have really nice wood. Thus I chose the 710 for my kick around gun.

The Savage is definately worth a look. If they had had the offerings they have now when I bought the 710 maybe I would have gone that route.

I don't target shoot my 710, so I expect it to last a long time. I bought it for a specific purpose and it has served me well for that purpose.

If you have the extra $ and want to buy the 700 by all means do it. The 700 is a better gun.

One of the reasons I bought the 710 was the 710 has a detachable mag. which I prefer.

By the way I put the scope off the 710 on another rifle so it wasn't a total waste!
