buckshot_09
i'm hoping to have a little money left from my student loan and figured i'd reward myself for a good year's work by buying a bigger deer gun (i have a model 94 44-40, but i want something a little bigger for the longer shots). i'm buying used, and thinking of going for either a .270 or 30-06. which is better? and if anyone has any preferred models or other calibres in mind, feel free! any input appreciated! Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: .270 or 30-06? For deer only? Then find a gun you really like that's somewhere between a .243 and a .338 and learn to shoot it well. If you're planning to go after larger stuff like elk and moose, discard the smaller calibers and look at .270 on up. Your shot making ability and selecting the right loads are much more important than the caliber. Good luck! And welcome to the forums! hutchies
Re: .270 or 30-06? .30-06-You can get anywhere from 125-220 grain shells. If I had to choose one cailber to hunt with the rest of my life it would be the .30-
Canadian_Goose
Re: .270 or 30-06? .270 vs 30-06 is like the ultimate debate on deer guns. Either gun will kill deer deader than doornails. The 30-06 is a little more versitile but you can shoot a flatter progectile out of the .270 for deer. My dad owns a .270 and has taken moose and elk with it as well. I think you should make your desicion not on caliber but on what gun you like best.
Guest Finn
Re: .270 or 30-06? Either....can't go wrong with those calibers. My favorite rifle is a Browning A-bolt in .
M00N
Re: .270 or 30-06? I would agree with Canadian_Goose about caliber being second to getting a good style of gun. I would go somewhere that you can look over a lot of different styles of guns in the two calibers and hold them, look down the sights, etc. Find one that feels good to hold and fits you best. It won't matter what caliber it is you're going to shoot better if the gun fits you comfortably. Then once you find a gun style that fits you best you have to decide on caliber to get it in depending what you're hunting with it and where. If you're hunting a lot of long distance shots and just deer I'd go with the flatter shooting .270. If you're going to be shooting closer shots or at bigger game like elk I'd go with the .30-06. Once you get the style and caliber figured out then all you have to do is figure out what rounds shoot best and will kill your game best out of it. drkillemquick
Re: .270 or 30-06? can'y go wrong with either, but I would go for the 30 - 06, have it love it.
VermontHunter
Re: .270 or 30-06? I agree also you can't go wrong with either caliber,,, I owned a Remington 7600 in .30-.06 but found myself needing a weapon that would reach out there and touch something so I went to this weapon... Browning .270 A-Bolt with the BOSS System.... In my opinion I think you would be happier with the .270, but this is like everything hunting related, it all a personal preference.. Good Luck with your choice, and Im sure you will be happy with either of these choices...
PAbowhunter86
Re: .270 or 30-06? They both are great for deer. But if you plan on going out for bear, elk or anything else I would say 30-06. the .270 would handle them but the 30-06 is more popular. I like the Ruger great bolt action, really smooth, but the older ones odnt have a adjustable tiger, not sure about new ones. I have a Ruger .270 and every deer I hit fell done with 1 shot. I have hit in the lung and also have taken out both front legs all with One shot.
bfletch7441
Re: .270 or 30-06? Get whatever gun is most comfortable for you. The 30-06 is the more versatile of the two, but a .270 usually has less recoil and is easier on the shoulder when you are sighting in or just practicing. Best of luck with whatever you get. johnf
Re: .270 or 30-06? Take whatever money you've got and go out and get the best deal you can find. Not the cheapest gun, but the best deal. Of those two calibers, don't sweat it either way I don't think there is anything you would shoot that they wouldn't kill, nor is the recoil or trajectory difference big enough to worry about. Just my 2 cents.
Nick
Re: .270 or 30-06? Ive got both and both work awesome on deer. If it were ME and I had to choose between one or the other, it would be the 30-06. A 30-06 would be more practical if you ever plqanned on hunting any other big(ger) game and still had great long range accuracy. Not to mention that there are alot more options for ammunition and its alot easier to find.

The .270 will kill any North American animal just as effectively as the .30-.06, the advantage of the .06 is a larger round selection.... You make the call, here's the Ballistics of the 2 weapons... I really think you would be happy with either of these 2 choices,,,,

EKYhunter
Re: .270 or 30-06? How can anyone argue with getting a 30.06. Finest all around caliber made for North American game. Look at all of the bullet choices you have and almost every mom and pop store or hardware store carries rounds for the 06 if you were ever in a bind for ammo. I've owned one 06, a 30-30, 270, and a 300 WSM A-Bolt. Can't go wrong with the 30-06. It also killed a load of Germans and others during the great WWI and WWII. wtnhunt
Re: .270 or 30-06? Not arguing with an 06 here. Both are great deer calibers and will effectively kill more than just deer. The 06 does no doubt offer more versatility. I have been hunting with a .270 for over 10 years, short or long range with 150 grain core lokts it has never let me down. All that said though, my next deer rifle purchase will be an 06 just becuase it is so versatile.
