Re: Public Land Turkeys

We have WMA's in Tennessee. Use to have alot of paper company land in our county had to buy a permit to hunt on it , think it was all leased out last year but it was the best turkey huntin in my area period , killed several great bird's there . really miss that , there wasn't very much hunting pressure there either it was really hard to get to.

NY public lands to me are dangerous come turkey season. When the turkeys start gobbling early in the morning, all the weekend end warriors converge to that location and they will set up 20 yds from you and literally try to shoot that bird on the roost or flying off the roost. One guy shot a hen, not knowing you are only allowed a gobbler. I no longer hunt public lands for several bad mishaps.

There hasn't been any problems around here. Only minimal numbers of hunters and most of them are folks I have seen almost every year hunting the same places they always do.

Re: Public Land Turkeys

PA has so stinking much public hunting ground.......... 1,400,00 acres of State Game Lands, 4,500,000 acres of private land in Game Commission co-op's that's open to hunting, and a gazillion acres of state & national forest........there ain't no way to pick a "best" place.

we have a lot of public hunting land in wv but you could not pay me to hunt in any of it any more i use to hunt public a little bit but i have had some many bad experinces with idots its unbeliavble the one thats the show stopper with turkeys happened a few years ago me and my cousin were hunting on whats called bartons ridge a public hunting area we were calling to a gobbler one morning had him fired up pretty good we he shut up all of a sudden not knowing what had happened fiugred he was coming in silent i counited to call from time to time when we started hearing some strange gobbles in the same area as we last heard the gobbler we talked about as they got closer every time i called and more and more frequient we decided it had to be a jake and countied to call looking about 30 yards around a bench we were setting on i could see something moving in some brush telling my cousin i could see movement he called agin gobble gobble it came from the brush senseing something wasnt right i stopped calling and the bush counited to gobble for at least 20 minutes none stop then a man stuid up it was idot with a gobble tube crawling around trying to sneak in on the gobbler he had already scared off and the hen me he thought was with the gobbler a grown man at that probaly around 50 you would have thought he would have knew better he was lucky he didnt crawl in on some trigger happy idot like his self after anouceing we were there i gave him a few mouth fulls and swore public land never agin

Re: Public Land Turkeys

At the public land I hunt we are pretty lucky. Most of the people hunting there are regulars and we all know each other and what areas we prefer. Yes there are problems at times but it is public land. However there are quite a few days that the WMA I hunt at is better than the private lands near it because there are more hunters surrounding the public than what is on it. confused.gif
