Guest Colorado Bob
Anyone start their workout program for elk season yet? I started mine just after the 1st of the year. I'm 51, so it takes a little longer every year. I'm doing 25 minutes on a stair climber, then free weights----for my pec's, lat's, shoulders & then some shrugs for my neck. Then back on a bike for another 30 minutes. I do this 3 times a week & then on the weekend I take about a 2 hour hike with the dog----about 6 miles & about 500-800 feet gain in elevation. This summer I'll add a couple backpack trips & then climbing(hiking) several 14,000 peaks here in SW Colorado. My stairclimber says I climb 120 floors & the bike ride is about 6.5 miles. The sweat just pours of me on those. But come October ----I'll be ready !! CB What's your workout ?
billkay
Re: Working out for elk You're a better man than I am. LOL I am in the midst of giving up smking. That will help more than about anything else I can do. I usually will walk several miles a day and climb the stairs at a local tobaggan run with weights as the season gets closer. Guest Andrea
Re: Working out for elk Walkin my booty off. When summer gets here I will start swimming. Practice holding my breath for long amounts of time to increase my lung power. ( Good buddy of mine suggested this)
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Working out for elk Forgot to add I do 150 crunchs----3 times a week. Huntin girl-----try to make the walking up hill----if you use a treadmill put it at a 10 degree incline. You out tin the real world----find a hill. Also if you can use the football stadium bleachers they are REALLY good also. billkay----I've never smoked-----I can still go pretty good up the Rockies !! Especially if I'm chasing a bull or better yet a full curl bighorn !!
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Working out for elk No matter what I do before hand, the altitude always gets me. Takes about 3 days before I can build up any wind. I do lift weights 4 nights a week and lead a generally active lifestyle on the weekends. We rode 45 miles of tough singletrack last weekend in Moab. I also beneft from living at altitude and and a active lifestyle. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Working out for elk BeanMan, you should check out Montezuma Canyon just east of Blanding. I've mule deer hunted that area the past 2 years and it looks like it would be excellent mountain biking. They get very little snow, so it should be open most all winter. Very scenic, lots of Kiva ruins and petroglyphs. Also lots of mule deer, coyotes and lions to see.

rifleman25
Re: Working out for elk I am circuit training with weights 3 days a week, and doing cardio workout 3 days. This has taken the post season weight off in the past. I also put 2 one gallon jugs of water in my back pack giving me about 15-16 pounds of weight and hike on some trails out here at the state park in the summer. Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: Working out for elk Rode the mountain bike up Garvey Canyon in the Colorado Bookcliffs after work today. 2100 vertical feet gained in 12 miles. Saw lots of deer and two elk, keeps the workout interesting. BM

Guest pabowhunt
Re: Working out for elk Hey CO Bob, that's quite the workout! Best of luck to your season. I do the tread mill at 10 degree, go higher as season gets closer. Do a little free weights at work. I also hike the mountians of PA as time allows. Not the same altitude but gotta do something. Typically it takes me 2 days at 10K ft to get really adjusted.
