huntaholic
I was wondering what the best deal is for a turkey barrel/rifled deer combo in semi-auto.

AJ
Re: What Turkey/Deer combo? I would have to say the Mossberg 935 also. It will pattern better than any of the other semi auto guns. Their rifled barrels are decent quality and will definately hold minute of deer within the useful range of even the best sabot.

AJ
Re: What Turkey/Deer combo? You got it! That huge bore can make a big difference in the pattern of the 3.5" mags. Well, actually any shell will pattern better from a larger bore. The late shotgun guru Stan Baker experimented with shotgun bore sizes, patterns, and velocities. He actually marketed a barrel for the 870 called the Baker Big Bore. It had a 0.800" bore!!! That is larger than a 10 ga bore. That is the same size as the 12 ga chamber. Basically it had a 28" chamber and a 2" choke tube. It patterned superbly and got higher velocity compared to a standard bore barrel. In the cold temps, it could be finicky though. Mossberg's big bore is still larger than anyone elses at 0.775".
too_pointer
Re: What Turkey/Deer combo? I know my guns overbore is .775 and a standard 12 ga. is .731. Now, one more thing, do you think an extended ventilated choke tube is the best option with an overbored barrel, or does it not make a big difference against regular flush mounted chokes ? too_
AJ
Re: What Turkey/Deer combo? When I first started sighting in a scope on my 835 using 3.5" turkey loads, I was getting beat up badly by the scope. I left the range, went home and put the barrel in my vise in the drill press and commenced to drilling holes in the barrel as ports. I put 10 holes on both sides. It made a big difference in recoil. Now, does a ported choke tube make as big of a difference? I don't think so. One of the things the choke tube ports are for is to redirect the gasses so they don't push the wad through the shot string, disrupting the pattern. In theory anyway. Does this lighten recoil any? Maybe slightly at best. Your semi auto action will reduce recoil more than the ported tube will.

woodsman2230
Re: What Turkey/Deer combo? Benelli has some real good guns that come with a smooth and rifled barrel, but it will cost a little bit.

In PA we can not use semi-auto shotguns for deer.
