Re: Georgia Openner

Here's the Story.

Sorry for the litte explaination,i was headed back to the woods and threw the pic up while swallowing a sandwich.

Yesterday evening i was able to watch 2 longbeards an hour before flyup, one strutter and another amigo. Watched which way they headed to roost and vowed to be in the field right where they were strutting early this morning with bow in hand. I devised a little plan to ensure a good shot with a bow, I have a half strutt "Bubba" feather flex decoy that i folded the tail in on and replaced with a real turkey fan. . . kinda surprised me as to its realism.

I was certain this would work after watching the longbeards dominant attitude the evening before. Well before daylight i hauled all the bells whistles to the field edge, i'm sure i looked like bigfoot sneaking down the field edge with all that stuff. But i popped the doghouse blind up just inside the woodline and placed the 'secret weapon' 12 yards straight out front over top a squatting hen, i flanked this pair with another hen decoy. At daylight i heard several bird gobbling across the big field, but nothing reasonably close to me. . . . i sat tight knowing the longbeards would show up eventually. About 7:45 i had a hen come into the decoys and mill around before heading across the field. At a little after 8:00 3 shots rang out down the field edge to my right, on the neighboring property ( i was on the property line ). I stepped out of the blind and walked around the corner to see that i'd been cut off and both gobblers were dead. Kinda bitter sweet b/c it was a father son duo that doubled up, 2nd bird for both of them. . . the boy was only 11. After congratulating them, i packed up my set up and went to the truck. After riding around and glassing my other farms with no luck I decided to try the other side of the farm where i'd heard the birds gobbling at daylight although a stiff wind was picking up. A little ill from the morning and doubtful of success, i carried the 870 along. Getting to the back of property i spotted a bird in a green field through the trees, but it spotted me as well. I backed up and proped against a small pine. After dozing on and off for an hour, i began calling but couldnt hear a thing due to the wind which was kickin' now. At 12:10, just after a calling sequence, a longbeard busted over the hill 30 yards away followed by another. They were directly out front but i had my hands crossed and they were making their way quickly down my right side. When the second birds head went behind a tree, i made my move all in one smooth motion. Both birds stopped and craned their necks out, i touched off leveling the 2nd bird to the ground at 25 yards, the other bird flyup and landed right back down, i moved the gun over and started cutting. . . he just looked back for his buddy and i decided not to shoot, and get my partner in there next week for him. I shot some of his beard off due to the rushed shot but he had 9 7/16 inches left, a 1 inch razor sharp spur and one deformed 5/8 inch spur (3rd turkey in 2 years that i've killed that has had deformed spurs) and weighed in at 19 pounds.
