Guest guess
Texas has a youth only weekend for turkey season this year! My oldest daughter Leanna wanted to go,so we were off! Saturday didn't produce much even though it was a beautiful day ,it started out a little cold around 30 degrees, but warmed up nicely as the day went on! We did see a few birds ,but not until late in the day and all they had on their minds was roosting! We hunted again Sunday afternoon, the wind was steady from 25 to 37 mph. We called and called ,but if they were gobbling we couldn't hear them! we walked all the way through the place calling with a slate my old trusty one! NOTHING! as we walked back through toward the truck I decided to try out my FoxPro FX3 {legal in Texas} I played the excited hen.Immediately we heard gobbling! We got set up with a decoy out and just let the caller play! As the birds approached ,we could see that it was 3 jakes, since Leanna had never killed a turkey I told her she could shoot one if she wanted! As soon as they got in range of the decoy the wind blew it off the stake and they left! We moved about 100 yards and set up again started calling and they gobbled again! This time as they came in there were several more gobbles behind us I looked over my shoulder and there were 4 jakes in that group.Leanna decided to take one of the first 3 jakes ,I told her to go ahead and shoot when ready. The first two were about 20 yards away when she shot the farthest one which was 30 yards out ,she is shooting a Remington 870 youth model 20 ga. using "Hevi 13" man did it ever do a number on that jake! I asked her why she shot the farthest and she said he had his head in better position than the others! I congratulated her and we were talking over the hunt and we hear more gobbling. We hurried to set up again and once again played the excited hen! It was the four jakes from before I decided to let her take another one while they were hot {we are allowed four gobblers} ! She fired when they were 25 yards out and made another perfect hit! Even though they were not huge gobblers,I was still very excited for her,she did a great job on the trigger,I'm very proud of her!
