Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

This is mostly depend on what your guns shoot well. What working in my gun may not in yours. I do not have a 308, but my buddys shoots Federal Premium Ballistic Tip 150gr loads awsome! I would go to WalMart or wherever and pick up a couple different boxes and see what happens. 150gr bullets are plenty for deer.

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

As for what will work in your particular gun........only a bench session will reveal that. The all-time, most awesome factory loaded .308 ammo I ever used is the Winchester 180 gr. Silvertip (not Ballistic Silvertip). I don't know if this bullet is still available or not. But, man, would it ever stomp a whitetail's nose into the dirt!!!!! shocked.gif

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

robk......

They do still make the 180 gr. Silvertip . Are you sure the 150's you have are not the Ballistic Silvertip? . There is no current listing for a 150 gr. original Silvertip in the .308 Win. Not to say the 150 gr. Ballistic Silvertips would not be a good choice. I just do not have any firsthand experience with them.

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

Robk, I am also testing .308 loads now for my Encore. I have shot Federal Powershocks in 150 and 180 and I do not like the groups I am getting at 100 yards. The 180's shot about 2" groups but I am looking for sub 1" which is very possible with the Encore and the right bullet . I also shot Rem. Coreloks at 50 yards with touching holes but at 100 yards they went all over the place.

I have since gotten boxes of Win. Silvertips 150, and some brands ( can't remember the brand off the top of my head ) in the 160 and 163 weights. I am going to the range tomarrow and I will try and post the results if I have time.

PS: I have been told by more than one person that if I were a handloader The boatails in 160 are a real shooter.

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

hey eight point i found some old 150 grain soft points that remind me of the silver tips or they could be from a pmc soft point ammo that was used in the military the way they are packaged but they sure shoot great. i was shooting quarter size groups at 100 yards i am lucky to know the shop owner and they are saving me some more of them. excellent rounds and the casings are reloadable so i am happy with the 150 grain but i also want a 165 grain bullet to shoot as well. i can use that round for elk and my 150 for deer and other critters. i was very surprised and happy to see how well the 150 grainers shot.

strut this i believe is a military ammunition set up but they are now in my weapon and shooting great. send me your email and i will send you a coupl of pics of them and maybe you can help me out as i also think that maybe pmc or federal or hornady could make this but i will be glad to send some pics so i can get a positive id on them so send me your email please

thanks

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

Robk, I found tha t the Win. 150gr power points shot the best out of all that I had.. The Win. 168gr ballistic tips didn't shoot that great. I also had Fed. 163gr (?) bear claws that didn't impress me either. The Fed. Power shocks in 150 shot better than the 180's but neither were as good as the Win. 150's for now. I am going to pick up another box of Win. 150's and shoot them again with the balance of the others mentioned as a double check. The weather yesterday was not great. My trusty Encore 50 cal. was even acting up.

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

i have what i believe is the winchester 150 grain power points in 308 and it is one sweet shooter. i also have some 150 grain nosler ballistic points coming to try out and shoot as well. i have some people that reload that said they could reload and mkae the 165 grain bullets fly extremely well as well. i will be playing around with them as well when they get here, thanks for the help and i am happy very happy with my 308 and how well it is shooting

Re: factory load for a 308 caliber

My favorite bullets for the .308 Win are the 150 gr and 165 gr offerings. I have had great success with Hornady SP and BTSP, and the Nosler Ballistic Tip in handloads. The Hornady Light Mag ammo shoots great in all of my .308 Win guns. As a test to see what the gun is capable of, I test them with Federal 168 gr Gold Medal Match Ammo. Over a dozen different guns, it has shot the best of any factory ammo, but, it is not for hunting. The bullet acts like a FMJ even though it is a hollow point.
