Canadian_Goose
Does barrel length affect accuracy in rifles. I heard that if a barrel is too long it will vibrate... is that true?
Master_Chief
Re: Barrel length I don't know about too long but too short tends to make it less accurate. The lands and grooves need the length to impart the spin to get the stabilization for the accuracy.
AJ
Re: Barrel length All barrels vibrate. Longer barrels will have a lower frequency that has higher peaks of amplitude compared to a shorter, stiffer barrel. Look at benchrest guns. They are the most accurate guns made. Most have relatively short barrels of 20"-21" or so. The shorter the barrel the stiffer it will be. When long barrels are chosen, they should be much heavier profile. That creates another problem of action flexing. when a full bull 1.250" diameter 30" barrel is installed on a repeater action, the action will flex and it will not be as accurate as a shorter, lighter profile barrel.
