SuperMn106
I am looking to buy a trolling motor for my 12 ft aluminum boat and was wondering what Lbs of thrust would be best.
Gator
Re: Trolling motor help I have a 12ft Jon Boat, and use a 30lb Thrust TM. I think it is more than enough motor.
hutchies
Re: Trolling motor help I have a 30 or 36 lb transom mount that uses clamps on mine and it works great. BTW-I have a 14 footer.
SuperMn106
Re: Trolling motor help Thanks for the help guys. I want to start getting into fishing pretty good this year. I rarely go out on a boat so i want to start doin that more often. I would be mostly bass fishing in small lakes. I normally fish in rivers about 8-10 times a year. Gator
Re: Trolling motor help Super, I fish a 40 acre lake, and my 30lb'er is MORE than enough. I was out in 15-25mph winds Sunday, and had no problem getting back to shore.
SuperMn106
Re: Trolling motor help Thats awesome. How much am i expecting to pay for a trolling motor? We have an old 15 horse in the garage but needs some work. I also want a trolling motor because we have a 2 acre pond we have our boat in now. Gator
Re: Trolling motor help Think they run around $110-$120bucks these days. I paid less that a hundred for mine, but that was 6yrs ago. Academy Sports and Outdoors has a Minn Kota 30lb thrust for $79.86. guess they haven't gone up since I bought mine......Walmart should be comparable. I have extended the cables on mine so I can put the battery in front of the middle seat. this keeps me from being "back" heavy. 99% of the time I fish alone, so this works out good
hutchies
Re: Trolling motor help I found he one that I have. Here it is. $97.41 at wal mart for a 34lb thrust. 5 forward, 2 reverse gears. This thing will scoot my 14 footer and it still small enough to run for hours. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4016522
SuperMn106
Re: Trolling motor help Cool thanks guys. Looks like i might have to make a run tommorow and get one. Now i have to start looking for some poles. I have a couple wal-mart special spinning combos that work pretty good. I thought about goin to a bait casting rod and reel? any suggestions? Gator
Re: Trolling motor help Ambassadeur makes a real good baitcast reel. think Walmart sells a rod/reel combo also. That's all I have ever used.

Shaun_300
Re: Trolling motor help I have a Minn-Kota 30lb thrust motor, it pushes my 14 footer around pretty good, and it really scoots the 12 footer along... Once you start getting into the bigger ones, the battery life isn't as good, a 30lb thrust is more than enough.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Trolling motor help For baitcasting reels, remember that the more ball bearings it has, the better. Stick to a narrow spool reel that will hold about 120 - 160 yards of 12 lb test. For rods in a small boat, I'd suggest a good 6 or 6.5 foot graphite one piece in Med or Med Hvy action. Good luck! And always carry a paddle as a back up for the trolling motor.
SuperMn106
Re: Trolling motor help Well i went out and bought one today. I went to Gander Mountain just to see what they had. They had a Minn Kota 30lb for $94. I grabbed the brochure and was looking at it and figured i would go for the 40lb for $139. The salesman went out and looked and came back and told me they didnt have anymore is stock but he had a 54lb motor guide that comes with a battery charger and his manager said that was on sale for $169. Me bein silly and thinking bigger/faster is better i said i would take it. so now i have a 54lb thrust pushing around my boat. I asked my mom what size the boat was because it used to be her dads and it is a 14' aluminum. I will wait a couple more weeks to go get a rod and reel and some bait. LifeNRA
Re: Trolling motor help Not sure where the 24v motors start at, just make sure if you have a 12v that you use a 12v! But I believe you are still 12v with a 54lb. motor. I have a 54lb thrust on my TX-17 Bass Tracker. It moves that boat really well! With your 14', you will be making wakes! LOL!!! Just get a BIGGER deep cycle battery! Something along the lines of a SRM-29 or SRM-31. I use the SRM-31 for them electric motor lakes only! Can go all day on a charge! SuperMn106
Re: Trolling motor help I tried it out on our 2 acre pond and it can scoot. I have no idea what type of batter i have, but i read the specifications on it and they are: Minn Kota by trojan battery company Mk24DP Dual Purpose 72 ah @ 20 hr 125 min @ 25 amp 12v
hutchies
Re: Trolling motor help That 12v means a 12 volt system. 125 min @25 amp means thats how long it will run if fully charged and running at 25 amps. I don't know if that is low or wide open though.
