KirkV
Well I finally did it! Some of my friends have had some Illinois dandies that I have posted up for you guy's to see, but now it is finally my turn. On the first day of our shotgun season I had seen a few does and one small buck hunting in the morning by the cornfields on a ridge stand. So when the evening hunt came I moved further back in the strip mine spoils to try to intersept one of the bigger bucks that were on the property. I had actually seen this buck 2 weeks earlier when bowhunting and I posted the story how I didn't take the shot as too much trash was in the way. Well this time around he fell to my Remington 700 muzzleloader. I had had does and smaller bucks around me all evening on the evening stand when I heard another branch snap behind me coming out of some spoil banks. I slowly looked over my shoulder to see one antler and part of his face in the thick brush. Honestly I did not even see his body or was able to count points the brush was soo thick. I dialed up the scope and saw his mass on the one antler and knew he would definately do! I waited for a eternity for just one step. He was waiting for dark to step out and it was rapidly approaching. He took a small step and I saw his neck through a hole in the brush, so the crosshairs tried to find the spine and I slowly squeezed. BOOM sparks, lots of smoke, and when it cleared all I saw was a whit belly on the ground. He never moved fron where he had stood 45 yards away. When I got down I walked over to the brush and almost fell over when I saw the whole deer. I shook almost uncontrably for a couple of minutes, thanked the lord for the opportunity, and with a shakey voice called for my buddy to help me get him out. I will get a green score later today and post it up for you guys. Thanks for all of the help with questions and answers from everyone on the board. It paid off! KirkV
Re: 17 Pointer Down ( pics ) I did not have lot's of time to get him weighed as it was supposed to be 59 degrees that night and we had a lot to do, taxidermist, a 2 hour wait at the check station, Etc. He never hit the scale, but the taxidermist said every bit of 230 Lbs.
