BamaTrophyHunter
i've got a 22LR and it is just not accurate. I was wondering what all I need to do to put a 17Mach2 barrel on it.
Shaun_300
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 What kind of gun is it? You'd probably be further ahead in the long run just to buy a .17 Mach 2, rather than changing the gun you have over. Which you may not be able to do anyway, depending on the gun. I haven't had any experience with the new .17 rimfires, but from what I've heard on here, the .17 HMR seems to perform better than the Mach 2. johnf
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 What are you going to be doing with the gun? If your not shooting more than 75 yards I would just get a better 22lr and save the money on ammo. I would suggest a ruger 10/22 or a marlin modle 60 for starters. They are both reliable guns and most folks will testify to thier accuracy.
too_pointer
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 Check out the Rem. 597 semi. They are much more accurate out of the box than the 10/22, which usually requires too many afterparts. They also have more of a mans stock than the small 10/22. Just go where you can check both of them out. too_
BamaTrophyHunter
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 I got a Marlin Model 25N bolt action, and I was wanting to know if a 17Mach2 barrel would fit it. I can shoot ten times at a target and there will be at least 5 stray shots.
AJ
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 Nope, you would be better off buying a new gun chamered in 17 caliber. Why not clean the barrel with a Bore Snake and try some standard velocity target ammo in your gun? I think you will be suprised at what it will do. You have to try a few different types and brabds of ammo to see what the gun likes. I took 7 or 8 different brands and types of ammo to the range and shot a few groups with each one to see if it makes a difference. It makes a big difference. Even with my 17 HMR, there are some ammo types it does not shoot well.
dartonman
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 Im with AJ on this one....I just purchased a 17hmr Savage 93r with a synthetic stock and scope combo, and Im impressed with the out of the box accuracy it provides.....love that caliber now.....really impressive accuracy, even for a guy that drinks too much coffee..lol...average groups of 5-10 rounds you could cover with a dime at 50 yards....its my new squirrel gun...al
BamaTrophyHunter
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 Thanks guys, I cleaned the barrel and got some different bullets and shoots alot better now. I didn't realize the bullets had that much to do with it. I got the same grain bullets just a different brand.
too_pointer
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 I was at WalMart today and checked out the Savage .17 hmr, it is quite the gun for the price. I think I will put that on my " wish " list LOL too_
Guest Xen
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 one thing you can look at, is getting some better ammo for your .22 - i know you can get it cheap, but there is a difference in ammo. i've started buying some ammo that is a little bit hotter, and have found that my groups are tighter and that i don't have hardly any feeding problems. CCI Velociter - 1450 fps, Quick-Shok - 1550 fps, Stinger - 1650 fps. If you prefer Remington ammo, Viper - 1410 fps, Yellow Jacket - 1500 fps. Federal Hyper-Velocity - 1550 fps, or Aguila Super-Max is 1750 fps. All of those are around the same price range, $3 to $4 per box, which is still a LOT cheaper (3 times less on average) than the .17hmr and about 1/2 the price per box of the .17 Mach 2 I have shot the Aguila Super-Max ammo and I think it's great. I use their 30gr copper coated hollow-points and get great groups

I am using a Rem 597 also I now shoot CCI shells, and have yet to try the Federal. If you look at .22 rimfire sites, you will see the majority says the same. Even .22 shooters need to try alot of different loads to see what is more accurate and doesn't jam the action. too_
AJ
Re: 22LR or 17Mach2 [ QUOTE ] I have found that Remington ammo is NOT good at being accurate and misfires way to often. [/ QUOTE ] Not all of their ammo is that way. Remington has partnered up with Eley which makes some of the best rimfire ammo in the world and offers their match ammo under Remington's label. It is top notch. Their cheap stuff on the other hand is indeed just that.
