wtnhunt
Spring turkey opened here Saturday morning, overslept about 30 minutes later than normal, and ended up getting out a little later than I wanted to. Was already light by the time I had walked about half way to where I wanted to be. Heard several birds gobbling all the way in, and hoped I could get where I had planned to go before they got across the river. I was too late, probably about 15 minutes too late getting setup, waited hoping they might come back, but someone shot twice on a neighboring property about 45 minutes after I had been setup and the birds went quiet. Tried some calling, but never got any response. Ended up giving up for the morning after about an hour of not hearing any more, thinking I might have better luck in the afternoon. Headed back out about 4 Saturday afternoon, and setup in the bottom between where I thought they were roosting and where I knew they went to in the morning. Started hearing a few gobbles a good ways off within just a few minutes after I got setup. Just sat and waited, without calling, heard a few more gobbles they were getting closer. About 4:30 heard something in the brush out in front of me about 100 yards out. About 10 minutes later, saw a red head pop out from behind a tree about 85 yards out. I watched and waited for him to move, he was slowly angling through the brush towards the hardwood hills staying on a trail about 85-100 yards out. He got behind a tree and I let out a few light yelps with the box call. He started angling back closer towards me on a path that should lead him about 50 yards out to my left. Waited for him to get behind another tree and raised up my gun and got into position took my safety off and waited, took forever for him to finally get where I wanted him to take my shot, but he finally got there and I took my shot with my winchester and hit him hard with winchester high velocity #5. Not the biggest bird out there, but it is my first one. Weight just shy of 15 lbs. 1/2 inch spurs, beard about 4 1/2 inches.
