NYBUCK
AJ or anybody with experience on this. This week-end I bought a camo stock and fore-arm for my Remington 870. I have the stock on, but I can not get the old fore-arm off. At first it wouldn't even budge, but we put some penetrating oil on it and it cam loose. It will now slide like 1/4 of an inch but will go no farther. It sounds and feels like it is hitting something. I do have it off the gun. Any help would be greatly appreciated. HarvDog
Re: AJ can you help me ????? AJ helped me awhile back with this same thing. Remove the barrel. Then using needlenose pliers, unscrew the forend tube nut from the forend tube assembly. Once the nut has been completely removed, you can slide the forend off the tube assy. Hope this helps. NYBUCK
Re: AJ can you help me ????? See that is the problem. I have removed everything, and in fact I just got off the phone with remington, they said the fore arm should just slide out. But it wont, it goes about a 1/4 of an inch and then you can hear and feel it hit something. It just stops. They suggested I take it to the remington plant here in NY which is only about 40 minutes from me. I also know a few guys that work there so maybe I will see if I can get them to take it in. Tominator
Re: AJ can you help me ????? Are you talking about the whole forearm assembly, or the actual wood off the slide rails? Taking the wood off the tube/slide rail assembly is a booger, but the forearm assembly should be pretty easy. Turn the gun over so the receiver is upside down. Reach in there and make sure you depress the shell catch springs. You might need a 2nd person if they're really sticky. once both of the springs are depressed, it should slide right off. NYBUCK
Re: AJ can you help me ????? Thanks Harv, but I got it. Man that thing is booger. There was a little knick on the threads (don't ask me how) but it was preventing it from sliding out. I brought it into work and our machinest carefully filed it down and got it out. Now I can not believe the rust that is in this fore-arm and and on that cylinder. There is relly no way to clean this thing unless you take it all apart. Thanks everyone for the help or at least trying to help me. Now I am going to put the synthetic one on and re-finish the wood on the old stock and fore-arm. LETMGROW
Re: AJ can you help me ????? Moral of the story. Take the gun apart and clean it thoroughly. This applies to all firearms. Rust is not good!
NYBUCK
Re: AJ can you help me ????? I know I know I know, but I just never thought that you have to take this completely apart, right down to the last piece. I mean how many people take the forearm off there gun to clean it. I know now,

NYBUCK
Re: AJ can you help me ????? I got it out, long story but it had a burr on the end that wouldn't allow it out. Those little boogers are tight. Hopefully I will post some pics when its all done.
AJ
Re: AJ can you help me ????? What can help is to give the sleeve the forend attaches to a good coating of wax prior to putting the wood or plastic forend back on. Brownell's has a special forend tool to make it easier to remove and cause less damage to the threads.
NYBUCK
Re: AJ can you help me ????? Geez AJ now you tell me. Ha Ha J/k. Well here is the story. I could not get the forearm tube out, so I took it to the rifle club I belong to because there is a guy there that is supposed to know what he is doing. Man was I wrong. What a JA. I should have know when he said do you have a hammer. Geez. I am not a gunsmith my any means but I know that tool and guns just don't go. Well he precided to take a butter knife and tap the end, the end with the threads, I knew this wasn't good. He did get it to move but about 1/4 of an inch. It wasn't until the next day when I brought it into work that I saw the end of the threads were bent over, just enough to catch on the wood. I took it to my machinist and he took a small file and got the tube out, and cleaned up the threads best he could. But when I took the tube home and tried the nut, it was no go. The next day I took it to a shop that does a lot of work for us and he is a big hunter too, but, he said he could do it but not promising anything. So I said the heck with it, called buddy of mine who works at the remington factory about 40 minutes from me, and he is going to get me a new one. He said it will be at his cost. The whole thing only list for about $40, so I am figuring it may cost me $20. It just erks me that this guy who says he works on guns all the time messed this thing up. I should have just did it myself. Oh well. Live and learn.
