Guest deadeye270
Went hunting last weekend (opening weekend). Got to within 80yds of a few turkeys before making a call. But every gobbler was with a flock of hens and went the other direction as soon as you make the first peep. On top of that the hens aren't calling whatsoever or I would try to mirror their calling to instigate a hen fight. What do you do???
kooter
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... i would find out where they go after flydown and head there. don't call much. maybe a few decoys and some light calling. good luck
007hunter
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... Maybe try hunting in the mid to late morning after the hens have gone to the nest and them lonely toms will be looking for a new gal! Missed160
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... Birds disappearing to me always says they moved with the ens to a new food source. For that what you need to do is cruise some roads & check the fields, they are around somewhere, and they have to eat. For henned up birds, 007 has it right, late morning the hens slip away to their nests, so the gobblers get a bit lonely. THis also takes place as the season wears on & the hens start sitting nests. Then the Toms start wandering around looking for company. Don't give up on your spots, the birds will probably move back there eventually, but for now you need to move where ever they did.. BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... One tactic to use when toms are henned up in the field is just to run in hollering and screaming busting them up make sure you make as much rackit as you can scatter em good then sit right down and call the toms will come back to that spot ... I have used this tactic a few times and it worked great every time ... dont be afraid to try something different you never know what might just get that turkey the extra few yards you need. Guest HOYTUSA2008
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... I agree with what BowtechTurkeyHunter says. I've heard it works really well, and know of a couple people who do that year after year usually later in the season
Rhino
Re: What to do?? tough SC birds... The hens I've called in so far this year have come in to clucking and purring with one or maybe two cuts thrown in depending on the response from the birds. I rarely deliver a yelp call to turkeys when I'm set up anymore. If they went the other way, next time set up on the other side of where they were in the direction they went. My thought is they went that way for a reason and quite possibly not because you called from a different direction. BTW, I don't use decoys at all for my own reasons. In the past I've had more birds see them and walk off or lock up and stay out of range and then leave than birds that have come in looking for the company they see. I'd rather keep them looking for the bird they heard in the bush than seeing what they came in looking for. That's just my preferance here at home and anywhere else I go turkey hunting.
