CDubWSR
.... but no birds on the ground. Looks like im just about the only okie that went today that didnt put one down. I kinda started off on a bad note when i went to where the birds have been roosting for the last three weeks, hit hte owl hooter... and nadda. So i spent the rest of the mornin runnin around tryin to find some birds. I was lucky enough to stay dry all day but the wind was a blowin good. Finally got on two toms at about 8:45. I worked them all the way across a field and over a road and got busted by a hen i never saw when i was putting my box call down. At this point frustration is starting to set in. I continue to run and gun trying my best to hear birds in the wind. I finally get on another group of birds right at 2:00. I get the decoys put out and my room mate and i get tucked up under some cedars. work these birds for about 30 minutes as they slowly make their way. They end up gettin about 20 yards away right on the other side of some thick nasty stuff where we cant see them, but they are so close we can hear them spittin & drummin and their wingtips draggin on the ground. Sounded like there were three birds in this group and they were with some hens also. Apparently the hens had other things on their minds and they kept movin right on past with the boys in tow... and they kept gobblin as they walked away. Now im really frustrated. I finally get back on another bird at about 5:15 this evening. He answers me about 5 times and then goes silent. I waited till about 6:30 and kept callin thinking maybe he was tryin to sneak in on me but he never showed. All in all it was a really frustrating day, but still fun cause there was deff some action goin on. I have tomorrow off from work too so ill be hittin them again. I'll be just south of norman tomorrow and im not really sure what these birds are gonna be doin. Its gonna be another searching filled day. EKYhunter
Re: Lots of action today Well at least you were on them. Sounds like a good day for such bad weather. Maybe things will get better when the weather improves. Just hang in there and keep after 'em!

Rhino
Re: Lots of action today Sounds like you had about as much fun as you could possibly have without pulling the trigger. You mentioned that the wind was blowing pretty hard. I'll bet those birds you had roosted were there but the high wind had them shut down from gobbling on the roost. That happens here too when the wind is blowing pretty hard. It's very common for a lot of the birds not to gobble on the roost in a high wind but they usually crank up soon after hitting the ground. Good luck on your next outing.
