Turkeygirl
So since we've had chickens, we've had an issue with a fox or a couple problem foxes getting them when they are out loose. We moved our one dog down by the chicken coop in hopes he'd keep them away. We were wrong. We also have 6 ducks which my sister hadn't been closing in at night. Well between Friday night and Saturday morning, probably when the sun came up, we had a rooster who got out taken by a fox, and 3 ducks! Andy found that we have 2 different active dens in our woods and the one den had one of our ducks half pulled into the hole. As my mom and I were leaving for Walmart, he told us this. When we came back, he said he went up there a half hour later after we left to try to smoke them out or smoke them in, I'm not sure, but the duck was pulled all the way into the hole. From Conservation Biology this year, I know that what we have are a couple problem/pest foxes that are really really smart now since they first got a chicken and probably if we get rid of them, we'll be ok. I don't know if Andy's smoke thing suffocated them or not, I kind of doubt it, but I need to find a call somewhere and then sit up in our corn field and wait them out. A sad part is the fox came up and practically took the chicken and ducks right from under the one dog's nose. His doghouse is about 20 yards from the chicken coop and the feathers were right in front and around the coop. Anyone have any other suggestions? sureshot
Re: Fox problem! its hard to trap with a dog in the area, but you could make up a live trap in the pen were they are catchign the chickens, fox will not regularly enter live traps in the wild but in a closed area I think you could get them in.[if you need a idea how to build one let me know I have trapped coons with them[the ones I made] years agoworked great! other than that shootign them is hard couse they are doing the damage at night, TG also waitign by the active den[were bird parts are around] you might get a shot, just be prepared to shoot pups to couse they will prob be there,if you shoot the adults be prepared to get the pups to! as you know I do not like the killing of any animal while they have pups but in situations were they are causign probs there is no choice , once they are causign damage to livestock they is no turnign around they need to be killed, good luck tg! Turkeygirl
Re: Fox problem! Thanks sureshot. Andy and I went fishing today, got home and my sister had seen the fox pups and the mother moving them to the other den in our woods. My sister was actually right near the den watching them. Well we saw the pups and the mother at the den and Andy got his 12 gauge shotgun but them other disappeared so he took the .22 to try and get the pups but they ran into the dan so as I type this, there are some fires lit right now in the dens, you can see the flames from the house, but I don't know that it'll work. Andy thinks the scent will make them move again but I think it is better to wait and kill them then let them move because that fox will come back I'd think. I'll keep ya posted
Squirrelhunter91
Re: Fox problem! Definitely try and take em out with the gun Ruth.. That fox knows where the food is and will return. They are sly critters and won't be easily fooled. If you lived closer, I would head up there with my Foxpro and help ya out some..

VermontHunter
Re: Fox problem! Your hard part is done if you know exactly where the den is located.... I had to get rid of a nice sized Red Fox last season for my sister... He had made a den in their mound System,, Just sit and wait close by the entrance, a fox will feed 3 times a day, so it will need to exit that whole sooner or later, then just introduce him to your weapon of choice... Turkeygirl
Re: Fox problem! Well I saw the stinker today while vacuuming the kitchen, lol. I grabbed the .22 and had a good look at her, but I didn't aim high enough for the distance, therefore I didn't hit her. I ran and grabbed Andy's 12 ga. rifles slug gun which can shoot farther better but she was gone. She probably came back to try and move her pups. I walked up and saw she had dug another hole into the den and she's also dug out the other den at the other end of the woods. Sooner or later we'll get a chance

huntinguide
Re: Fox problem! my grandpa claims that you can get a pack of juicy fruit gum and get all the pieces open in your hand and run them under water and squeezing them all together. Make a big ball of gum and lay it where you know the fox will find it. If they dont eat it try putting some peanut butter on it. They eat the gum and there stomaches cant digest it, it in a way kills them from the inside out by getting stuck in their gut, they cant pass it. if that doesnt work just go out with a flashlight and 7mm. i know this works bc wve done it and found the foxes dead in their dens. One of them had the gum stuck on thier whiskers.
