Reds

Went out with a couple friends Friday night to try our luck with some reds. I caught 2 both well over 26 inches long and a 4 that were under 20 so I had to let them go. We can only keep 3 at a time anyway. It was great fun. We boat out to a wall on the lake and fish with shrimp and crawdads useing lighted bobbers. Let me tell you those reds can fight. I will have pictures of the keepers tomorrow as I forgot them today.

Does anyone else fish for these guys?

Not really....................don't do much bay fishing. Would much rather fish in the gulf where the big boys are. cool.gif

Have seen some monster reds caught here though!!

Re: Reds

Congrats on the redfish!

Ive heard of fresh water reds before, but I have only caught them on the coast. Can they reproduce in fresh water? Or do they have to be stocked? I thought that they had to be stocked, but not sure

Regardless, redfish are awesome! Very pretty fish too, with the big spot on their tail. Great fish to catch, they put up a good fight, and they taste awesome! (but running a filet knife through those rib bones is a chore!)

Here is a big saltwater bull red. Too big to keep (39 inches) He put a hurt'n on a 12 inch mullet. Took about 25 minutes to catch on trout tackle (12 lb test, 20lb leader)

Re: Reds

Thanks Shutter. I am not sure if the reproduce in freshwater or not, I think they do. I have heard that the fresh ones are some kind of hybrid, but dont know all the details. All I know is that they taste the same as the salt ones and just as much fun to catch, they do put up one heck of a fight!! I will have some pics tomorrow!!!

Re: Reds

I've always wondered what stategy is used for fresh water.. I guess its like any other fresh water fish (structure, food).. In saltwater, they love tide movement. When the tide is draining (or filling) a shallow marsh, those reds will school up really thick and tear up shrimp, crab, and mullet that are trapped or disoriented by the moving water. Its fun..especially when you can see them tailing along a grassline or reef.

Looking forward to seeing the pics.
