2 longbeards down

Saturday morning we (member "huntinguide" and I) sat up close to the roost, but they went the other way. We tried ambushing them, but they were always 1 step ahead, so we backed out and drove around looking for other birds. Around 8:30 we came back and I hit the Power Crystal and a bird answered. We moved in closer and closer, when I saw them on the edge of the timber and they saw us too. We waited until we couldn't see them, then dropped where we were. After a painful sit without moving (so the birds wouldn't see us) we could finally move to a tree. We set up 10-15 yards apart and waited, and waited, and waited. We came up with a strategy to not call until the 2 toms followed a hen by us, then we worked them in slowly. They had to have been in range for 30 minutes or more, but we set up too far apart we couldn't tell if the other had a shot too. Finally, I heard Shane say "pick one" and we both shot. We were lucky enough to get 2 longbeards, but when I got to mine, I found I had either shot the beard off or it broke when he fell. My bird was the dominant of the 2, and the video proves he had more than a 6" beard. I'm guessing he was about the same size as Shane's, which was just under 10" I believe. Both had 3/4"-1" spurs and both weighed 22 lbs. One of the most rewarding turkey hunts I have been on. It was so nerve-wracking, waiting, wondering if my buddy had a shot at the same moment I did at the other bird. It ended up working out, but man was it stressful! Here are the pictures.

Re: 2 longbeards down

Congrats to both of you. Way to go guys!! Glad to hear it all worked out with both of you bagging your birds. Sounds like you both had a great trophy hunt. Sorry you shot off part of your beard Ryan. That happened to me on my 1st bird this year too.
