Guest Wholaverj
I was thinking about buying a 17 are they any good or will a 22 out perform them?
Guest littlered
Re: 17 HMR it depends on what you are doing but in most cases the .17 will out preform a .22. i bought a .17 HMR and couldn't be happier for what i use it for. it shoot's flat and fast, the biggest downfall is it can be effected by the wind greatly
hutchies
Re: 17 HMR I love mine and a .22 doesn't hold a candle to a .17 The .22 is fun to plink around with but there is nothing like a 70 yard headshot on a squirrell or a jackrabbit. too_pointer
Re: 17 HMR A .17 mach 2 uses the .22 l.r. casing necked down from the .22. The .17 hmr uses the .22 magnum neck down, and in most cases is the better choice. too_
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: 17 HMR For varmit hunting--prairie dogs---I like the 17 HMR----It will reach out & touch them. For plinking I like the 22---you can shoot all day with a $10 brick of shells. CB
dartonman
Re: 17 HMR I absolutely love my newest purchase....its a heavy barrel 17hmr made by Savage...I bought it with a 3 x 9 scope and synthetic stock, and it will shoot dimes at 100 yards with no wind.....but, we took it out today in the high winds, and we were still smoking pop cans and small targets in the 70 yard range with no ill effect....its a great gun......you would be not unhappy to own one.....al
too_pointer
Re: 17 HMR Hi Al What model # is your Savage .17 hmr ? I wonder if it is the same one I saw in WalMart ? It had a wood stock and a bolt action. I don't remember if it had a bull barrel or not. No scope with it though. Mike
Guest Wyttale
Re: 17 HMR The .17 is a good rifle but if you want a rifle that isn't affected as much by wind drift try the .22 mag with a light bullet. It has the range of the .17 but you will drop out in the velocity catagory.
DannoBoone1
Re: 17 HMR Living along a wooded creek bottom has many advantages, but there is also a downside.....lots of various types of varmints....crows, starlings, fox, 'possum, coyotes, skunks, and WAY too many raccoons. The 17HMR has taken care of all these but the coyotes. For my uses, there is no better rimfire. (OH, and it's a fantastic squirrel rifle, too, being accurate enough to make head shots or through the ribs at rediculous rimfire ranges." This thing shoots more like a small CF than a RF! AJ
Re: 17 HMR [ QUOTE ] The .17 is a good rifle but if you want a rifle that isn't affected as much by wind drift try the .22 mag with a light bullet. It has the range of the .17 but you will drop out in the velocity catagory. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, your mistaken. The 22 mag has about twice the wind drift as the .17 HMR. Velocity and ballistic coefficient are key to reduced wind deflection not weight. The 17 HMR and the 22 Mag are very similar in performance on game out to 150 yards. huntinguide
Re: 17 HMR i have a H+R varmint heavy barrel and it shoots like a champ... i toped it with a BSA platinum 8-32x40
dartonman
Re: 17 HMR Hey Too.....I have the Savage 93R....it has a stiff trigger, but I tell you what, I would stick with the synthetic in my opinion...but the 17hmr is a great caliber in any gun that I have seen....my Savage's barrel is floated, and is a tack driver....bought some new cci ammo yesterday, Ill try and get some pics of the vermin in Illinois that will soon feel its rath....its turkey season here though, so Im gonna give the respect I always wanted from fellow hunters, and not shoot for gophers or groundhogs till all the hunters are at home taking naps...we can only hunt birds till 1pm. al
