TRAP CAMP

Took a couple of days off this week to attend an NRA instructed Trap Camp with my son (5th grader on spring break). We had a great couple of days learning basic shotgun safety and operation as well as the basics of shooting trap. Had great weather and did quite a bit of shooting. First time my son has really gotten out and shot actually rounds of trap. I think his shoulder is a bit sore, but he was so into it that he spent quite a bit of time last night dry firing his 20 gauge while watching TV. I don't think it will be the last time we are at the range together. I couldn't be happier!! Great to see that there were about a dozen young kids out there learning to shoot trap. Smiles all around when those birds broke.

I'm not so sure that all that dry firing did his gun any good crazy.gif You might want to put a dummy load in the chamber so you don't do any damage. I'm glad you 2 had a great time, Dad and son, can't get any better than that grin.gif

Re: TRAP CAMP

also, make sure he spends some time putting the gun up to his shoulder and getting his sight picture. just bring the gun up like he's gonna call for a bird. you can also put up 5 spots on the wall to mimic the different targets he might get. start him off with a basic 5 from facing the house... hard left, soft left, center, soft right and hard right. stand thee with him and have him shoot a round at night with the dummy round. have him call pull and you tell him where to swing the gun. make sure he follows through with his swing, even if the spots on the wall aren't moving. bringing the gun up and down can make a big difference as you get him shooting more targets. also, make sure he knows that all the old-timers that will give him advice don't always know what is best for him. i started shooting targets around that age and though i had to do all tips and tricks everybody had, wasn't long before i couldn't hit anything.
