2nd KY gobbler: tagged out

I have been hunting for a few years with a good college friend. But, I haven't been able to tag a turkey with him until this year, 3 days into the 2006 season.

We were able to get to this bird on the roost. He flew down but seemed to be going away from us, (with hens we thought). He wouldn't respond much to hen calls so we shocked him to find out where he was heading to. My friend knew the lay of the land and we setup an ambush with some light yelping. Sure enough, we saw him at the edge of a field coming our way. So, we just waited 'till he got within range. He strutted a few times then I decided it was time to take the shot. But, I missed and had to shoot as he started to run away. My friend was highly impressed with the speed of my followup shot and the instantaneous pumping of my shotgun. Another notch on the stock of my 870. Excited would be an understatement. We were on cloud nine and I had tagged out within 3 days of the 2006 season.

24 lbs.

1 1/4 inch and 1 1/8 inch spurs

10 3/4 inch beard

Congrats on another nice bird.

Just because you're tagged out now doesn't mean you can't get back out there. Tag along as the guide now for a young hunter or a second caller for a friend.

Well, that is what I did the rest of the day after I shot him in the morning. I took today off turkey hunting and work just to chill out for a bit. 3 straight days of chasing gobblers wore me out. I will be heading back this weekend to call for my friend and hopefully help him bag a nice gobbler.
