BowtechTurkeyHunter
I am going to be getting a barrell for my Encore do you think I would be better off with the 45 cal instead of the 50 .. seems like a lot of the guys are going to 45 ... I really dont have a need for a 200 yard shot myabe the most I would shoot is 150 ... and that would be rare ... what are some of the pros and cons of a 45cal Im really leaning toward the 45 cal unless someone has some real negatives. Steve Any input would be great thanks guys
magnatecsteve
Re: 45 or 50 My dad killed his biggest buck, a huge 13 pointer, with a .45.... a flintlock at that. You might might not knock them off of their hooves, but with good shot placement, I wouldn't think you'd have any problems.
AJ
Re: 45 or 50 If you hunt just deer with it, the .45 caliber will work just fine. If you want to hunt elk also, get the .50 cal. Some states have .50 cal as the minimum for elk. Both will work just fine for critters up to caribou size. Actually, the .45 will reach out there and take deer size game with no problems. It allows the shooter to shoot lighter weight bullets for less recoil but still have decent ballistic coefficient for flatter trajectory and retained downrange energy vs a larger .50 caliber bullet. Guest andymansavage
Re: 45 or 50 .50 gets my vote, I shoot a .54 wolverine so I may be biased. But you'll need .50 for anything bigger than deer. Smokepoles don't kill with speed, you want a big hole. Andy
RangerClay
Re: 45 or 50 I would get the .50 unless you plan to hunt in NY. Right now we have legislation to ban anything .50 cal. and that includes 12 ga. shotguns. I see this bill getting passed if Spitzer becomes our next Gov. David_218
Re: 45 or 50 I would buy the .50 caliber. You can use sabots of .452" jacketed bullets in it, which is a .45 cal.

Lets all us gun owners and anyone with a little sanity get out and vote and keep him out. The liberal scurge is running rampant already we don't need another in the top spot here. johnf
Re: 45 or 50 Around here 45 ML bullets are hard to come by and I've never seen pellets for them. You can go into any wal-mart and most gas stations around here during ML season and get 50 cal stuff.
Guest toytruck
Re: 45 or 50 Do yourself a favor and get the .50 Encore barrel!! I had a .45 Encore barrel and it would only shoot powerbelts in 225 gr. with any kind of accuracy in a full conical .45 bullet. If you shoot sabots you are actually shooting a .40 cal. bullet, which will kill a deer if placed in the heart/lungs. You have better accuracy with the .50 Encore barrel and like already mentioned you can shoot .452 bullets with it which are balistically better than .50 cal. (My .45 barrel had the original 1:20 twist which has been replaced now with 1:28 twist after alot of people had accuracy problems.) My .50 Encore likes the Hornady .452/300 gr. XTP/Harvester crushrib sabot/ 100gr. (2) pyrodex pellets. I'm getting connecting hole accuracy at 100 yds. with that load and will use it this fall. On the other hand, I sold my Encore .45 barrel and bought a White Super 91 .451 and she likes the big 450, 460 gr. conicals at 100 yds. I'm still working up a load for it, but so far 460 White powerpunch bullets are touching hole accurate at 100 yds. as well with 80 gr. of Pyrodex P. I'm trying to get away from pyrodex and have some Triple 7 FFFg to try next range time...
wtnhunt
Re: 45 or 50 Steve, I personally like the .50 with a .45 cal saboted bullet. I would not hesitate to take a shot with my muzzleloader setup on a deer out to 150 yards.
too_pointer
Re: 45 or 50 I believe with the 50 cal. you can load down to the .45 and also load up close to the .54. Perfect cal. LOL too_
