wtnhunt
Another hot and humid day over 90 here. Get home yesterday afternoon, pull in the garage and my 10 year old and 4 year old daughters are getting out of the passenger side of the Yukon. As I am getting the carseat out of the back door on the driver side I hear my older daughter scream copperhead, copperhead. So I have a 15 lb baby in a carseat and I round the back of the yukon and sure enough a little copperhead about 10 inches long is on the slab and heading towards a spot in the garage where I have some plywood leaned up against the wall. So I took my size 13's and stomped on the snake and it temporarily quit moving, I kicked it out into the gravel and it started back, but slow enough I could get the kids in the house before it got back into the garage. So I go back out and hack its head off with the swing blade. My 4 year old had been as close as 2 feet from the snake wearing sandals. The snakes head was about the size of my thumb, big enough it could easily have gotten her foot had she stepped on it. Thank God she did not step on it or get close enough for it to strike. Later on in the afternoon after the wife got home. I went out and spread permethrin, an insecticide for controlling the crickets, fleas, ticks, and other pests. I also decided to put moth balls down for the snakes in front of the garage, around the deck steps and around the timbers by the swingset. As I came around the house after throwing the bag and box in the garbage can I about stepped on another little copperhead about the same size. We hadnt seen any venomous snakes since I killed a 3 foot long cottonmouth in the backyard about a month ago. I am afraid with the mild winter this is going to be a really bad year here for snakes. Tominator
Re: Not good-too close Wow. Sure glad we don't have them around here. According to DNR Licking county is supposed to have Copperheads, and the odd Timber Rattler, but I've never seen them. Every once in awhile I see a garter, but that's about it. Guest Nature_Boy
Re: Not good-too close I hate snakes. If I had come that close to a snake, everyone around would know it by the screams and gunshots.
too_pointer
Re: Not good-too close That is scary for everyone, not just the kids Happy you were able to avoid the danger, be careful, there are probably more little ones from the nest around. too_

Jeramie
Re: Not good-too close Im guessing there will be much more due to the two in one place. I bet they hatched and are living close by. Time to move around anything you have stacked up and start doing some snake killing!

[/ QUOTE ] Yup, get an old .410 single shot and keep it loaded and in the garage. Then when you get in situations like that, it's got ya covered. Glad everyone is ok William, I sure am glad we don't have any poisonous snakes here!
BowJoe
Re: Not good-too close We get the odd timber rattler around here and maybe a cottonmouth once in a while, but have only seen them in the woods or on or near Rend Lake property. Unusual to see them here at all, but you never know.

Also kind of concerned that any might have already gotten in the garage.

[/ QUOTE ] Yep Chris is right here for sure, no loaded guns in the garage. I do keep some shovels and other hand tools around though. Dont think I would want to shoot a shotgun inside of the garage anyways, would think that would likely lead way to work for me, could see me in the spurt of the moment blowing out a tire or hitting the freezer .
